Sadie Alshouse Obituary

SAN ANTONIO - Sadie B. Napier Walden Alshouse passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at the VITAS Hospice Care in San Antonio at the age of 102 years and seven months.

Before her short illness, she resided at the Regent Care Nursing Home in San Antonio.

She was born on a farm in Butler County on Sept. 7, 1905. She taught school in several Nebraska cities as well as in Colorado. After graduation in 1921, she began her teaching career in one-room country schools at the age of 16. She married Russell Walden in 1928, and they began farming in Nebraska. In 1946, they moved to Shelby, and she again started teaching in one-room country schools and later on in larger districts in Nebraska. After Russell died in 1955, she obtained her BS degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. She then moved to Westminister, Colo., in 1959 and taught there until 1971 when she retired. In 1976 she married long time family friend, Raymond Alshouse, and returned to Columbus. After Ray's death, Sadie moved to Boerne, Texas, in 1990 and from there she moved into a retirement facility in San Antonio and ultimately into a skilled nursing facility. She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church in Texas, Nebraska and Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her son, Donald Walden of San Antonio; two step-children, Robert Alshouse and Virginia Makovicka of Columbus; two husbands (Russell Walden and Raymond Alshouse); two sisters; four brothers; and her parents.

She is survived by her son, Keith Walden of Monroe, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Leslie Sietz and Dean Walden of Boerne, Texas, Suzanne Warner of Cypress, Calif., Lori Mangold of San Antonio, Dale Walden of Bennett, Colo., Cindy Schiedt of Northglenn, Colo., Robert Walden of Arvada, Colo., Mindy Ebrecht of Fort Collins, Colo., Kim Walden of St. Michael, Minn., Patricia Smith of Columbus, and Mark Alshouse of Fort Calhoun; 22 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; six nieces and one nephew.
