Adam Lanning Obituary

ADAM B. LANNING, IV., 52, died at his home Saturday, October 7, 2006. During his career in the health food industry, Adam was passionate about his role as a nutritional advocate. A superb athlete, he lettered in football, basketball, and track in high school and played football for Southwestern at Memphis, now Rhodes College. He ran many marathons with his dad and could easily steer a canoe over the Big Falls on Spring River—backwards and forwards—to the delight of his friends and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Adam B. Lanning, III, and his mother, Betty Dean Lunamand, and survived by his stepmother, Bunny Denton Lanning; his brother, Dean Lanning; and his sisters, Ryland Bruhwiler, Thaïs Kelly, and Bayberry Shah. A memorial service will be held for our beloved brother at Grace-Saint Luke’s Church, Tuesday, October, 17, at 11 a.m. In place of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to the Church Health Center, 1210 Peabody Ave., Memphis, TN 38104. I knew Adam from Snowden and Central. He was a fun guy with a great personality. He sat next to me in Latin and once he copied my test paper, corrected my mistakes and make a higher grade than I did. It didn't bother me that he copied, but that his grade was higher. I remember he was a "hunk" and was a star athlete. I would run into him through the years and he would always recognize me and say hello. He looked the same as he did back then. I miss those days and I will miss him, too.

My husband and I were shocked at Adam's passing. It took some time to confirm that this 'Adam' Lanning was the same 'Adam' (never knew his last name until now) that we had both enjoyed over the years. My husband was a marathoner and is a cyclist. Over the years, he and Adam would 'bump' into each other on the road, training or just riding. This of course was reinforced by my many encounters with him at Squash Blossom (Midtowners to the core, and more recently Square Foods), over the years. Always, when I came to shop, if Adam was there, he would grace me with his wonderful melodious voice, handsome face and hair, gracious ways, and knowledge about what I needed. He always asked about Jim when I went in - and true to form, he always asked Jim about me when he went in. When either of us returned from our latest Squash Blossom/Square Foods shopping, it was a highlight to say we'd seen Adam that day.
And we never knew, or needed until now, his last name.
May his family treasure all their experiences with Adam.

I met Adam and Dean way back when Adam was attending Rhodes College and playing football. Adam and Dean were tossing the Frisbee in Overton Park. We had many good times back then. I remember how often he spoke of his family and how much he loved them, that's what I remember the most about Adam. We lost touch over the years, but we ran into each other about 2 yrs ago and I couldn't believe my eyes. Adam still looked and acted like the Adam I once knew 30 something years ago. I pray that Dean, his sisters and friends will find peace and know that he was the best. Adam is in God's hands now.

Just spoke to John LaBue this morning, whom told me about Adam's passing. I can just see his big pictureous frame and long hair running to Heaven's gate and joining a lot of really good folks that have gone before us. Adam always held a deep place in our hearts and will be missed greatly. Please know we are praying for Adam and his family. God Bless

Connie told me of Adam's passing. We were so sorry to hear the news. I'd like to think that Adam, your Dad and Nicky are now together and remembering the wonderful times they spent together in Hardy at the cabin. I met Adam in 1974 while working at T.G.I. Fridays in Overton Square. It was always good to see him on my shift; Adam was a true team player and a caring person. He helped me through a lot of rough spots, since I was the only girl on each shift. I know the other cashiers feel the same way.

Dear Dean and Ryland,
I was so saddened to hear the news of Adam's passing. Our families intersected a lot growing up, and I know how much my brother Ray treasured his times in Hardy with your family. When we were at Central H.S. together, Adam was one of the athletes I admired from afar but who remained friendly and approachable. My prayers are with you today as his memorial service occurs, and in the time ahead.
