Bonnie Collins Obituary

Bonnie Jean Townsend Collins

Hernando, MS

Bonnie Jean Townsend Collins succumbed to cancer on June 29, 2016. Bonnie was born in Sunflower County, MS on July 30, 1928. Bony Bony, as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was preceded in death by her parents, Glover and Gertrude Townsend and her sisters, Marie Ferris and Carolyn Walters.

Bony Bony will be deeply missed by her family and friends. From her grandchildren, who she helped raise, to the many children she babysat, everyone loved Bony Bony. She was recognized at all of the athletic events she attended for her grandchildren. The referees knew her well as she often rode in on her motorized scooter. She made certain her opinion was heard when she disagreed with them.

Bonnie taught school and coached boys basketball after she left Ole Miss in 1951. She loved the Rebels and loved watching Ole Miss games with her children and grandchildren. She spent two years at Sunflower Junior College and truly enjoyed seeing her former classmates at the Junior College reunions. She held many jobs to provide for her family, including working for her son in his law practice for many years.

She enjoyed her last years at Indywood, rekindling relationships with her Delta friends and entertaining them with endless games of Phase 10. She was a gifted cook. Her cornbread dressing was the featured dish at the family Thanksgiving gatherings.

She was rich in the love of her family and friends and she enriched their lives as well.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara Watson (Cliff), her brother, Gordon Townsend (Nancy), her children, Billy Myers (Wendy), Danny Myers (Jeanne) and Belinda McAvoy (John) and her grandchildren, Alex Myers, Townsend Myers, Claiborne Myers and Kathleen Myers.

There will be a visitation held at Boone Funeral home in Indianola, MS on Friday, July 1, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. with a graveside service at 4:30 p.m. at Indianola City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.

Ms. Bonnie Jean Townsend Collins was like my second mom. Bonnie was the mother in law to our daughter Wendy. I cannot ever remember Bonnie not being her kind sweet self. It was a real pleasure to always be around Ms. Collins. She was happy in her life and it always came across to you. Her best friend was probably her Sister Pee Wee, Barbara. I usually never saw one without the other. Ms. Collins always told us to call her Bony Bony and Barbara, Pee Wee. They were the best sisters, I think I have ever known. Ms. Collins loved her Grandkids and was always there for Billy and Wendy, to help and do whatever to help the Family with raising those three children. It was a never ending story. We loved Bony Bony. Today we pray for God to heal the sad hearts of the Bonnie Jean Townsend Family and all of their Friends. God be with us.

Most Respectfully,

The Ricky Leigh Family
