Gene Page Obituary

GENE RUFFNER PAGE, 80, died January 25, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. He will be missed by his loving wife of53 years, Ella Howard Pickens Page; and his three daughters, Louisa Page Smith and her husband, Nulsen Smith of Chestnut Hill, MA, Susan Page Gates and her husband, Granville of Memphis, TN, and Nancy Howard Page Pettersen and her husband, Edward of Charlottesville, VA; and his son, G. Ruffner Page, Jr. and his wife, Penny of Birmingham, AL; eight grandchildren; and his brother, Roy C. Page MD. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Alfred H. Page, MD., H. Paden Page, and Mary Margaret Page Bailey. A respected and loved surgical oncologist, who served two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and has practiced medicine since 1954. He began his education with aB.S. from Rhodes College in 1948, continued with a M.S. and M.D. from the University of Tennessee. His Surgical Internship and Residency were completed atBaptist Memorial Hospital and Oncology Training at Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute, New York. From 1962 until the present, he practiced at the Page Surgical Oncology Clinic and the Memphis Cancer Center and was on staff at Baptist Memorial Hospital where he also held a teaching appointment in the Intern Residency Program. He also was on staff at the University of Tennessee Medical School. In addition he was amember of Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society, Southern Medical Association, Head and Neck Society, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a longtime member and elder of Shady Grove Presbyterian Church. His life was filled with his devotion to his wife and children, his love of medicine and his passion for flying. The Memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to the Church Health Center or a charity of the donor's choice. Memorial Park Funeral Home 901-767-8930
