Anna Konopka Obituary

Dr. Anna Konopka M.D.

New London, NH - Dr. Anna Konopka M.D. died peacefully on Monday August 25, 2025 at her home in New London, NH at the age of 92.

Anna was the daughter of Leon Konopka and Maria Zuelinska, born February 6,1933 in Rzeszow, Poland. She retained clear memories of life before, during, and after WWII which she would share many stories about.

In 1956 she graduated from the Academy of medicine in Krakow, Poland. She then finished rotating internships in Krakow University Hospitals in Pediatrics and OB GYN.

In 1961 at the age of 28 years old, she arrived in NYC, and in 1962 was employed by Saint Catherine Hospital in Brooklyn, NY as the house physician. She went on to a rotating internship in Misericordia Hospital (Bronx NY), then did a pediatric residency in Morrisania City Hospital.

Anna was studying at the Columbia University Library when she met William Carmel whom she would marry in June of 1964. The couple honeymooned in NH, where Anna instantly fell in love with the area.

A year later Anna started her second year of pediatric residency in Brooklyn Cumberland Medical Center, and third year residency she finished in Jersey City Medical Center. After completing residency she worked in different pediatric clinics at Jaurico City Hospital in NYC, and two years in a state hospital on Long Island NY, making it a total of 15 American Hospitals where she worked.

In 1970 Anna delivered her daughter Krysia, and the next year would open her private practice in Northport, Long Island. Her practice was mostly pediatrics, but she also treated adults.

Anna was the attending physician at Saint John's Hospital in Smithtown NY, with 400 acute beds, and Huntington Hospital with 250 acute beds.

By 1988 her marriage had dissolved, and her daughter was attending Dartmouth College, so she relocated to New London, NH where she opened her private practice next to her house as a pediatric and family medicine Doctor. She had already received her NH medical license in 1968, knowing that she would move there one day.

Anna was a member of the Medical Society in Suffolk County LI for 20 years with recognition of outstanding status provided by their award, the Medical Society of NH.

Anna was an accomplished family Doctor who saved many lives, and was devoted to treating her patients with the knowledge, care, wisdom and compassion. She even made house calls, and would visit her patients if they were in the hospital, even for minor surgery. She also supported patients and friends in the court of law, giving testimony in several court cases.

She was passionate about politics, and communicated frequently with representatives from all around the world, focusing on the well being of our country and its citizens.

Anna was a giver, donating to several societies and organizations. She was always punctual with paying her bills on time, even until the day before she passed.

Anna was always hospitable and kind, especially with her patients who respected and loved her. She was a supporter of natural medicine, and carried a wealth of information she accumulated over her lifetime of experiences. She was wise and intuitive, and healed many.

Every summer Anna traveled to her hometown in Krakow, enjoying the company of family and friends, eating gourmet food, and sharing good medical advice with the gathered guests.

She was a devoted Catholic, a talented pianist since age 3, she enjoyed activities such as her daily swim in Kezar Lake, cross country skiing, she loved dogs, fine art, fine food, and inviting guests for meaningful conversations over coffee and Polish cookies.

Beautifully dressed, with a wide smile and bright blue eyes, she radiated health and kindness to all around her.

Anna is predeceased by her parents Leon and Maria Konopka and her brother Jerzy Konopka of Krakow, Poland.

Surviving members include Jan Konopka (brother) of Switzerland, Daughter Krysia Nelson of VA, Kathrine Nelson of VA (granddaughter), Kinga Konopka (niece) Krakow, Poland, and Ella Pietrczak (cousin)of Astoria, NY.

Dr. Konopka was an extraordinary physician—her vast knowledge, excellent diagnostic skills, and genuine care for her patients made her truly exceptional. She always found the time to listen, to understand, and to help, offering not only treatment but also comfort. To me, however, she was more than a remarkable doctor—she was also a dear friend, full of warmth and kindness. Her passing leaves a deep emptiness, but the memory of her compassion and dedication will forever remain in our hearts.
