As a young girl I went camping with Uncle Clayton and Aunt Rachel. I remember one night in particular where he towed his pop-up
(Rockwood) camper up some "mountain" in Vermont (in the dark), and the front tires of his beloved Volkswagen lifted off the ground. Uncle Clayton stayed calm and made it seem "fun". I never worried when he was at the "wheel".
It's a memory that has stayed with me throughout the years. Thanks Uncle Clayton for showing me how much fun camping was.

Chief Higgins was a mentor and friend for my entire adult life. He nurtured me after my promotion to Fire Prevention Lieutenant at age 24. Keeping me in the wings with the idea that I would eventually make an excellent Fire Marshal. As a result working under Bill Proper for several years who taught me many of the engineering aspects of the job and introducing me to the Society of Fire Protection Engineers where I joined at the Technologist level and attending many meetings in the Boston area. I am sending condolences to the family and Fire Service. Sad that I can not attend the services due to Covid 19 exposure during a recent trip.

Chief Higgins's legacy continues to benefit everyone who lives in, works in, or visits Concord every day. He had the foresight to recognize the potential of emergency medical services to enhance the value of the Concord Fire Department in its public safety services and worked to bring together partners from the health care and educational sectors to make that vision a reality. He was deeply passionate about the City and its people and was the model of a great public servant.
He was also a good friend to me and I miss him tremendously. I send my condolences to his family and friends on the loss of a great man.

My deepest condolences to the Higgins family, it seems like yesterday I was blessed with conversing with Clayton as well as his brother Albert back in the 70´s. Both men were very well respected in the community and were always a joy to be around. Clayton served the city well and left a lasting legacy from his days on 55-M7 on the heights to rising to the rank of Chief at central station on Warren street. Rest In Peace Clayton.

I'll never forget the day Captain Higgins cleaned fish for me. It was in the mid-1960s, when I was just a boy of 11 or 12. My buddy and I had spent a good part of the day fishing in the Merrimack River, and caught quite a few fish. However, we weren't really sure what to do with our catch. My buddy suggested we take them to his uncle's house. Heck, it's on our way back home - why not? We showed up in Uncle Clayton's kitchen with two pails full of stinking fish, in all our glory. Clayton's wife quickly fled to the security of her living room, but he remained with us in the kitchen, showing great enthusiasm for our bounty. Exhibiting the patience of Job, Captain Higgins cleaned, rinsed and wrapped all of our fish, and sent us on our merry way. Pedaling home, I remember thinking how lucky my buddy was for having free access to Uncle Clayton's Kitchen & Fish Deli. Thank you, Captain Higgins.
