David Breen Obituary

David Breen

Webster, NH - David Breen, beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, teacher, musician, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, after living with cancer with grace, mindfulness, and courage. He was 66.

David's life was one of many layers, woven with creativity, compassion, and a search for truth. He was an entrepreneur whose ventures reflected both hard work and artistry - from commercial cleaning to owning a flower shop, to founding and operating his own yoga studio. Each path carried his signature mix of humor, compassion, and trustworthiness.

Music was one of David's deepest passions. He played many styles of music and created original works. He was inspired by Todd Rundgren, who he once met, not only for his artistry but for the fact that he wrote, recorded, and played all the instruments imself. In a beautiful sign from the universe, David and Laurie attended a Rundgren concert in Boston on their very first date. Since retiring in 2020, David embraced that same model of creativity by writing, arranging, playing, and performing music in his own right.

In 2007, David founded Sharing Yoga, which grew into a thriving community and trained more than 200 teachers. His classes and teachings were grounded in both yoga philosophy and more recently in Therav?da Buddhist wisdom. He taught that presence was enough, that every breath is both a beginning and an end, and that life's impermanence is not something to fear but to embrace. He extended this practice far beyond the studio, volunteering to teach yoga at the New Hampshire State Prison and the Payson Center for Cancer Care, offering dignity, compassion, and healing in places where it was most needed.

David's devotion to the path of mindfulness shaped not only his practice but his way of being. Whether meditating on impermanence, traveling across the world, or sitting in stillness at home in Webster, he embodied the teaching: "This is the only moment we truly have."

He was a man of humor and quick wit, of generosity both quiet and bold. He gave freely to charities, mentored countless students and friends, and was a cherished companion to many.

He was endlessly curious - a traveler, explorer, writer - whose presence made every space feel larger, lighter, and more alive.

Above all, David's truest devotion was to his wife, Laurie. Together, they built a partnership of profound love, mutual respect, and shared vision. Their marriage was a living practice - steady, compassionate, and filled with joy.

David's life was a testament to the truth found in both yoga and Buddhism: that while all things are impermanent, love is not. His legacy will continue to ripple outward - through music, through his students, through his friendships, and through the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

David is survived by his wife, Laurie Farmer; mother, Barbara Swansburg; siblings, Susan Nardone (Jeff), Bill Breen (Hazel), Carol Young (Mark). He also leaves behind father and mother-in-law, Frank and Barbara Farmer; brothers-in-law, Tim Farmer (Megan) and Tom Farmer; former sister-in-law Darla Williams, Lydia Breen, nephews and nieces, and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Breen.

I first met David in Rishikesh in 2005 in Madras Cafe and our friendship grew stronger since then. He was a great guy. Every year he would come to India and we would sat by the Ganges. Staring at the water flowing.
Every time I'll see the Ganges I'll remember you.
Rest in peace.

I will cherish all the memories of a great friend. From playing street hockey on Corcoran Road to climbing to the summits of Mt Washington and the other Presidental's in the middle of winter. David was always up for a challenge, and I was lucky to in the right place at the right time and go along for the ride. When I look back at my life, the times we spent together are among the happiest. I was blessed to know him and call him my friend. Rest in peace my friend. I will carry you with me forever.

"In the grand scheme of things, this is going to be OK". I once shared with David about some issues I was going through, and this was what he said to make me feel better. And he was right! I love his wisdom, wittiness, and passion for living right. In the recent years I've also discovered his sense of creativity in writing and music.

I do wish we had more time, to travel to China together as we had always spoke about it, to have more karaoke sessions and sing our lungs out or just sit together to chat over a pot of hot tea.

It still surprises me everyday, how fate has brought us together from halfway across the earth apart. Thanks for the friendship, your warmth, quirkiness and great times David. It was a pleasure and I will miss you so so dearly. You will continue to live in our hearts and in our memories, and continue to inspire us, for as long as can be.

I was so very fortunate to meet David and Laurie at the Water Palace in Ubud, Bali at the very start of 2020.

Following our shared reverence and awe under a large, moonlit sky, witnessing a stunning cultural performance i went on to bump into them two more times. Once when they were purchasing malas for their studio Sharing Yoga and another on the mat in a yoga class - realising that we all had a shared passion, as students and teachers of yoga.

I have remained in touch with them both since that day, with our paths almost crossing again back in Bali this year.

David always resonated generosity, authenticity and a warmth that stood out and touched those around him deeply.

He was so kind that he even shared news of my first retreat offering with his own students on the other side of the planet!

More than once i shared with him and Laurie that i wish Sharing Yoga was my local studio so i could be present for their offerings which resonate deeply with me.

My love and thoughts extend back across the world to David's extended family and especially to Laurie, at this time of profound loss.

Go gently.
David will never be forgotten.

Love,

I knew David over the past 10 years through Sharing Yoga, a wonderful creative gift that he and Laurie built for the community. The courage and honesty expressed in his final four blog posts made the distance between this world and the next, between body and spirit, much more porous and comforting to me. Whoever wrote the words "every breath is both a beginning and an end" in his obituary gave me a practical and helpful way to practice the mindfulness that David achieved. So grateful for David, Laurie, and Sharing Yoga!

I can´t say I knew David really well. I knew him a little and really enjoyed the brief conversations we had which usually felt way beyond small talk. I always felt richer after seeing and talking to him. David was unique and lived a full life.

David and Bhavani's visits to India were filled with warmth and joy. Despite his 4-year battle with cancer, he showed incredible strength and positivity. What's remarkable is that he never shared his struggles with me, instead spreading love and kindness. He touched many hearts with his gentle nature, and his presence was felt even from afar. Though he's gone, his legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire us. He'll be deeply missed, but his memory will guide us towards kindness and living life fully. I have no words for him. All words are short hor him. Om Shanti
