Belated condolences to your family. Representative Clarke was known to me as "Tiny", the powerhouse grandmother next door when we lived on Lake Jo Silva in NH. I have memories of her and Dave with their three grandchildren as some of the kindest, most helpful people you could hope to share a community with. In a casual moment for her, but a significant one for me, Claire taught me to swim. I was 12, skipping a birthday party because all the activities were water-based and I didn't want to be the only one in a life-preserver... without leaving her rocker on the porch, Claire instructed me to put on Stephanie's water wings and swim out over my head. Through the screen windows, she told me to take one off and swim back! The confidence in her voice and manner somehow convinced me to risk drowning and repeat the pattern with a single "wing"... and that was it: I could swim after a 15 minute coaching session. Not only did this simple act change my summers forever, it showed me that I could do more than I realized, even when I was "in over my head". I went on to become a special education teacher, never realizing that was one of Claire's fields of expertise. Indeed, I never knew about her political stature or activism until reading her obituary. She and Dave were both modest, down-to-earth people who truly cared about others. Although we only were neighbors that one summer, I think of them both often and fondly.

Claire was a wonderful House Representative and always kept the interests of her constituents in her heart and mind while debating and voting. She was a warm and wonderful woman. I will always treasure our time together in the front row at Town Meeting.
