James Kinhan Obituary

Good Morning. It is a good morning. I am sitting here in my bedroom looking out the windows, visiting with my daughter, Maryellen. The sun is bright. The temperature is warming. Together my daughter and I are writing my obituary. So if you are reading this then "I Am Here!" You may wonder did he say "I am Here?" Yes! And it's a good day because I have passed to the "Here".

It has been a sweet walk with cancer, with time to share, to visit, to laugh, to cry and to just know that getting to this "Here Place" is the arrival of my next step in my spiritual journey. Throughout this walk Ginny, my children, my family and my friends have walked by my side.

I was born in Quincy, Mass. and grew up in Salem Mass. I enjoyed a childhood of freedom and support. My parents, Sam and Em experienced addiction and they lived 49 years of recovery. Their example and way of life "one day at a time" left an imprint with me and guided me throughout my life. As I faced life's challenges I did my best although sometimes I fell short. The balance to this is; I was still open to the pool of love in my soul, to be a way to give back, reach out and welcome others. I re-discovered my spiritual path with the discovery of "My Ginny" and her entrance to my life on Edgemont Street. Through all these years I have been blessed with four loving children, Catherine, Maryellen, Kelly and Peter. Like many families, my children and I have known in's and out's, connections and disconnections, sweet times and challenging times – yet our relationships have grown deeper and more loving, touching hearts. And they are "Here" with me now.

My ever joyful brothers Mike and John survive me, may they continue to carry my spirit out to the fairways. I had a rich career filled with opportunity. I provided Mental Health Services in New York, Colorado and New Hampshire. As a counter balance I was able to have a fulfilling career as a volunteer in many community organization, schools, social support groups and the South Congregational Church in Concord.

Just as little children riding in the car… or maybe even adults.. might often ask are we there yet – meaning have we reached our destination to the "Here Place". I say Hallelujah! We all get there some day and today IS MY DAY! In these troubled times of our world it is important to hear and exchange our stories with each other. Listen and tell compassionately. Comfort one another, be ever mindful of the gifts you have and sing them a loud. I am famed for the hymn "This little light of mine" and I invite you to be open to hear the words of LIGHT and cherish the LIGHT and sign a loud the LIGHT.

Please celebrate my life with Ginny, my children, my grandchildren, family and friends. It is my hope this celebration will be full of joy, vibrant splashes of color, and singing loud and clear "This little light of mine – I am going to let it shine"

From the moment I first met Jim at South Church last year, his exuberance and joie-de-vivre lit up the room. His grace in the face of his terminal diagnosis continues to fill me with awe and admiration!

We first met Mr. Kinhan through gatherings of Pete's Concord High friends. We fondly remember Mr. Kinhan as a jovial conversationalist, always taking a keen interest in our teen trials and tribulations and getting a deep level of enjoyment out of simply shooting the breeze. It was apparent to us then that Mr. Kinhan was not only a different kind of guy, but also a big reason behind all the great qualities that we came to appreciate so much in our friend Pete. Reading this obituary and reading about the admirable way Jim carried himself only serves to further solidify that in our minds. We recently shared this story of Jim's amazing walk with our own family, and it strikes a chord with everyone. So I guess we just wanted to say that, to let you know another way Jim continues to have such a far reaching impact, and to thank you for so openly sharing Jim's inspiring message.

Peter...though I never met your Father, he clearing has made a positive impact on the lives around him. From what I have learned, he was brave, full of life and a creative individaul...I love his obituary! My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

Dear Ginny, Cathy, Maryellen, Kelly and Peter and to all your family,

Over the past 40 years our lives have sporadically crisscrossed and, always, Jim was a shining light with his ready smile and undaunted enthusiasm. Watching Wimbledon in your living room, an outing to the Cape and Provincetown, watching Ryan and Max golf, entertaining Peter at Webster Lake, seeing Olivia at Conant, dining on fish Jim prepared. Jim called me last year to bake four loaves of bread for the soup charity; I benefited from the feeling of "sharing with others," Jim's eternal spirit.

He is "here."
Fondly, Jeannie and Glenn Berger

I first met Jim when I volunteered at the Concord Mental Health Center in the late 60's or early 70's The Center was started by Terje Reinertsen, Tom Carson and Jim. I learned much from all of them as well as Dr. Anna Philbrook. I was hired and worked at the county jail and later emergency services and provided psychotherapy. At one time Jim and I led a group for single moms. These days that would be unheard of. He would like to see the fourth wave of feminism that is occurring now because of Trump. I have lost touch with many of my colleagues from those vibrant times. Condolences to Jim's extended family and friends.

I first met Jim when I volunteered at Concord Mental Health Center. Jim and Tom Carson and Terje Reinertsen started the mental health center. I was later hired as a full time employee and worked at the county jail and later emergency service and other programs. Jim was a compassionate memorable person. At one time he and I ran a group for single mothers- something that would be unheard of these days. I learned much from him and Dr. Anna Philbrook. Although I have not stayed connected since moving to California in 1978 I cherish those days of working with Jim and the days I spent working at the mental health center. Condolences to the extended family. [email protected]

A great muse and amazing man has left soooo much "reflected" light in so very many lives. Jim Kinhan's life was one compelled by love and culminating in service to his fellow humans. The world has lost a light, but it's reflection in the lives he shared himself with, will blind you. Godspeed Jim <3 Sending love and prayers that Ginny, his family, and friends, will be able to smile through their tears as memories fill their hearts.
