John Sherburne Obituary

John L. Sherburne

Deerfield, NH - Born June 12, 1923, John Lewis Sherburne peacefully passed away at home Sept 15, while being cared for by family. Born in New York City, his family moved to Long Island when he was 10. His was a life of service for others, first as an Air Force pilot from 1942 to 1970, and later as a politician.

In WW2 he survived 60 missions with the 325th Checkertail Clan, flying P-51 Mustangs in support of bombers in Italy. Following the war, he attended UNH, graduated in 1949, then reenlisted in the Air Force. In 1968 he volunteered for Vietnam and flew a C-130 Airborne Command Post.

He retired in 1970 with his wife Suzie Sherburne and three kids to the Deerfield property he bought as his retirement home in 1950. There as a novice farmer he was a quick study and mainly raised sheep, with a few cows, pigs, and cattle, and eventually evolved from farming into politics. As a Deerfield selectman he fought to help the town retain its rural character by supporting its required three acre lots. As a Concord politician he supported the Marine Patrol, the Lakes Association, the Forest Association, and the Department of Environmental Services.

He achieved his ultimate goal: to leave the family home as a viable farm for family. He is survived by 5 children, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Deerfield Town Hall October 20 at 4.

Jack was an inspiration at UNH´s cardiac rehab program where he ran the stadium stairs well into his nineties. My wife remembers that he was influential in protecting NH lakes. We have missed his friendly presence at cardiac rehab and send our condolences to his family.
