Linda Bartlett Burrowes, formerly of Concord and Canterbury, N.H., finally succumbed to pulmonary fibrosis in Raleigh, N.C., September 25, while traveling to her home in Englewood, Fla.
She was born in Worcester, Mass., Dec. 12, 1945 and graduated from North High School. (She attended her 55th reunion two weeks before her death.) She attended Bates College, where she met her husband, Melvin Burrowes, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology.
Linda had two careers; the first as mother and "domestic engineer," bearing and nurturing three children. Her second career fulfilled her long time interests in math and people; 24 years as a tax accountant; seven as a preparer and instructor with H&R Block, and 17 as an IRS certified enrolled agent with Peter Brankman and Co. in Concord, specializing in estate and trust tax work.
Linda was an avid reader and long-time participant in the South End Literary Guild. She was a member of United Baptist Church, where she served as Treasurer, the Canterbury United Community Church, East Congregational United Church of Christ and, eventually, the Venice, Fla., United Church of Christ, where she served on the Audit Committee. She loved classical music, especially Mozart, and sang soprano in choruses and choirs from her high school years up through the Suncook Chorale and Shaker Singers. Linda was a generous volunteer, participating for years in the Concord, N.H., annual CROP Walk, and doing pro bono tax work for a small ethnic church in Manchester. Her beautiful eyes and warm smile brightened many gatherings.
Linda and Mel loved the outdoors; hiking and traveling the United States in an RV in retirement. They spent parts of many summers at their cabin on David Pond in Maine, where Linda pursued her love of swimming, even swimming ½ mi. in the early years of her illness.
Linda also pursued an interest in Bartlett genealogy. A quintessential detail person and researcher, Linda managed the course of her illness with sharp attention and detailed knowledge, impressing doctors and nurses alike.
Linda is survived by her husband of 50 years, the Rev. D. Melvin Burrowes of Englewood, Fla.; brothers and spouses: Philip and Connie Bartlett of Big Fork, Mont., and Mark and Patti Bartlett of North Easton, Mass.; sons and daughters: Jeffrey and Barbara Burrowes of Lakewood, Colo.; Susan and Iku Ohashi of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Daniel and Miho Burrowes of Kyoto, Japan, and by seven beloved grandchildren: Ella and Maxwell Burrowes, Hana and Mika Ohashi, and Riku, Noah and Lia Burrowes.
A memorial service for Linda will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018 at East Congregational United Church of Christ, 51 Mountain Road, Concord, N.H.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Canterbury United Community Church, PO Box 216, Canterbury, N.H., 03224 or Planned Parenthood Federation of America at weareplannedparenthood.org.
