Marilyn Hancock Obituary

Marilyn L. Hancock, 76, of Hopkinton, passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning, Aug. 11, 2012 at home in the arms of her beloved husband, Bud Hancock. She had a deteriorating heart condition for several years and she and Bud anticipated this day would come at some point, although it came about very quickly in the end.

Marilyn was born and raised in Modesto, Calif. the daughter of Lawrence and Florence Chaffee. In her youth she was an accomplished figure skater and enjoyed summers in Maine as a camp counselor. She attended college at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. and graduated from The College of Idaho, Caldwell, Idaho with a BA & MA in Elementary Education. She taught in elementary schools for more than 20 years in California where she was a beloved and devoted educator. The family moved to Hopkinton, NH in 1985.

Always a talented crafter, sewer, and quilter, she opened the Country Quilter Quilt Shop in the three story barn and ell that adjoins their lovely 1800s colonial home. The business grew, flourished, and provided 15 years of enjoyment to the many women who learned quilting in her beautiful and active quilt shop. Always the teacher, this was the highlight of her teaching career and a wonderful time in her active life.

In addition to her husband, Bud, Marilyn is survived by three children, Shelli and Bob Lachance, Scott Hancock, Catharine Hillsgrove, and eight grandchildren; a brother, Russell Chaffee and sister-in-law, Marjorie Chaffee, both of California.

A memorial Service celebrating her life will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, UCC, 1548 Hopkinton Road, Hopkinton, NH 03229.

A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Marilyn's name to the Memorial Gift Fund of First Congregational Church of Hopkinton to the above address. The family invites comfortable summer attire in consideration of the warm August weather.

I always enjoyed visiting Marilyn's quilt shop. She managed to find the prettiest fabrics for her customers. I was heartbroken when she closed her shop. She will be missed.
