Mary P. Gridley
Thornton, NH — Mary P. (Embery) Gridley, 83, wife of Charles Gridley and daughter of Alice Embery, passed away on December 7, 2021, in Concord, NH after a long illness. Mary was born in Clinton, Oklahoma in 1938. When she was four years old her family moved to Amarillo, Texas where she attended elementary and high school. After high school she worked at the makeup counter at White and Kirk Department Store. It was during that time she met Charlie who was stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base. Mary and Charlie married in Texas and moved to New Hampshire after his military discharge. In 1963 Charlie joined the New Hampshire State Police. In 1964 they bought their house and moved to Thornton where they raised their three children. The house was their pride and joy which she kept immaculate and decorated. She was a wonderful, caring, loving mother, and her kids never went without. Mary was an excellent cook and baker. Through the years she worked several jobs in the food and restaurant industry. She was locally known for her Southern Fried Chicken (which was better than KFC, by the way). For many years Mary was the local Tupperware dealer which gave her great pride. And she loved birds. Most of all Mary loved her family. And she loved Charlie. They were attached at the hip. They were inseparable. She will be deeply missed.
Mary is predeceased by her daughter Justine Renee Gridley, mother Alice Embery and her beloved husband Charlie. She is survived by brother John Embery, her son and daughter Michael Gridley and Tara Herzog, her four grandchildren, Johann Herzog and his wife Leslie, Christian Herzog and his fiancé Allie McMahon, Hannah Herzog, Rachel Gannon and her husband Ryan and her nieces Stephanie and Sharon. Calling hours will be Thursday, Dec.16 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with a Memorial Service starting at 1pm at The Mayhew Funeral Home, 12 Langdon St., Plymouth, NH. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make any donations in her memory to a charity for children or the hungry this time of year. The holiday season was always special to Mary preparing big holiday dinners and beautiful holiday decorations. If you can, donate to the NH Food Bank (or your local food bank) and to the Toys for Tots Campaign donating new, unwrapped toys for children in need this holiday season.
