Seymour Berger Obituary

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – So long Dad, Great Friend, and Mentor, Sy Berger a long time resident of Rockville Centre, N.Y. died in his home Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, of natural causes. He was 91.

Sy Berger has been called the Father of the Modern Baseball Card. Sketching out new ideas at the kitchen table in the early 50's he transformed baseball cards into a major collectible, a new hobby, that captured the hearts of a generation of youthful baseball fans.

Sy Berger was born on July 12, 1923, and grew up in New York City. An avid sports enthusiast he talked his way into Yankee Stadium on numerous occasions. After graduating from DeWitt Clinton High he went to Bucknell University. Sy served in the European Theater during the second World War as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corps. Upon his return in 1946 he married his surviving wife, Gloria. Dad was a trusted friend, advisor, to all of Baseball for over 50 years. He lived each day with joy and shared his warmth, charisma, and stories with all.

Sy Berger is survived by his wife, Gloira Berger of Rockville Centre, N.Y.; sons, Glenn Berger of Concord and Gary Berger of Glen Cove, N.Y.; daughter, Maxine Berger-Bienstock of New York City; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

We shall continue to cherish his loving spirit along with his unconditional willingness to care for others.

Deepest sympathy to the family. There is a depth of compassion felt for you. The loving kindness of GOD can sustain you through this difficult time and in the days ahead. The passage in Psalm 147 verse 3 assures," He heals the broken hearted; He binds up their wounds." May you have a measure of comfort in the support of each other and sharing loving memories.

As we travel through life, we are each privileged to meet a few memorable people. Sy was one such person. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. (Formerly with the Cleveland Indians, National Association, Chicago Cubs 1996-1986.)
