Thomas Mortell Obituary

Thomas F. Mortell

Gilford, NH - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Tom Mortell, 82, of Gilford, NH, on January 11, 2025, peacefully surrounded by his loving family.

Tom was born on November 30, 1942, in Somerville, MA, to the late Robert and Ruth Mortell. Tom grew up in Hingham, MA, where he attended school alongside his siblings, Robert Mortell, Nancy Coughlan, and David Mortell. It was there he met his beloved wife of 62 years, Judith (Ridlon) Mortell.

As a contractor, builder, and skilled fixer of almost anything, Tom dedicated his life to supporting his family. His work not only built structures but also created a strong foundation for his loved ones.

While his work as a builder left a lasting mark, Tom's greatest legacy is the relationships he nurtured and the memories he created. Known for his resourcefulness, frugality, and boundless generosity, Tom's heart was as big as his talent. His warm and engaging personality made an impact on everyone he met. His music-whether strumming his guitar or sharing his joyful singing-was a constant source of happiness, and his unique language of made-up words brought laughter to all who knew him. But perhaps Tom's most enduring gift was the wisdom he imparted: the importance of family, and the value of taking time to enjoy life's simple pleasures.

He is survived by his wife, Judith, and their children: Lynn Wolfe and her husband Doug, Susan LaFrance and her partner Ross Nickerson, Regina Glynn and her husband Arthur, Stacey Rojek and her husband Doug and Thomas Mortell, II and his wife Beth. Tom was predeceased by his daughter, Lori Mortell, whose memory remained dear to him throughout his life. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Tom's memory will live on not only in the generations that follow him but in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

My family and I had the pleasure of getting to know the Mortell Family when they lived in Barnstead NH across from the boyscout camp. We had some fun memories with the whole family. Snowmobiling across the lake, singing, and learning to play a comb. We are so sorry for your loss.
