John V. Helmey

1937 - 2025

John V. Helmey, a longtime resident of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on January 2, 1937, in Savannah Beach (Tybee Island), Georgia, John lived a life marked by hard work, devotion, and a love for his community.

As a master carpenter, John dedicated 36 years of his life to working for Union Camp, where he not only honed his craft but also took on leadership as Vice President of the Union. His family remember him as a man who could build anything, a testament to his skill and passion. In addition to his professional accomplishments, John was a proud member of the National Guard, exemplifying his dedication to service.

John's generous spirit extended beyond his family and career. As an active donor, he contributed gallons of blood to the American Red Cross, showcasing his compassion and selflessness. A talented musician, he found joy in playing the guitar, banjo, and harmonica, sharing the love of music with those around him.

John is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Carolyn Dossey Helmey of Savannah, GA, and his children: daughters Sherri Lane and Janet Mayne (Michael), and sons Eric Helmey and Barry Helmey. He is also survived by his stepsons Michael Westberry and Hugo Carter. John's legacy extends to his cherished grandchildren: Brian Cail, Kristen Cail, Matthew Cail, Sam Helmey, Hannah Helmey, Molly Mayne, his step granddaughters Haley Carter and Tia Carter, and his step grandson Hugo Carter IV. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Myra Helmey, his son David Helmey, and his grandson Robbie Cail, as well as his step granddaughter Taylor Berry.

Family, friends, and those whose lives John touched are invited to a visitation at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Georgia, on Friday, December 5, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 pm at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, where John will be laid to rest.
