On November 3, 2025, our beloved husband, father, Opa, and friend, Jesse Joel Mathews, passed away peacefully at the age of 93, surrounded by the family who loved him so dearly.
Born on Halloween day, October 31, 1932, in Hempstead, Texas, to Henry and Ona Mathews, Jesse grew up with a strong sense of family and hard work-values that shaped every part of his life. After graduating from Conroe High School in 1952, he proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1965. Following his service, he built a long and successful career with Huntsman Corporation, where he worked with dedication until his retirement in 1992.
On November 13, 1958, Jesse married the love of his life, Elke. Together they built more than a home-they built a lifetime of memories filled with love, laughter, and family.
Jesse was a man of quiet passions and simple joys. He loved reading and could often be found with a good book in hand. He also found peace in the stillness of a fishing trip, whether casting a line alone or sharing the moment with family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Elke; his children, Melissa and husband Douglas Oates, and Robert Mathews; and his sisters, Betty and husband Ruben Hernandez, and Linda and husband Roy Firtha. He was a proud grandfather to Dubby and Shawn Oates, Trenton, Joshua, Marissa, Alyssa, and Ryan Mathews, and Caleb Evors; and a deeply loved great-grandfather to Raelyn Cooper and Kale and Aiden Mathews. He is also survived by his nephew, Jack Brown, whom he held close to his heart.
Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ona, and his son, Michael Mathews.
He will be remembered for his steadfast love for his family, his quiet strength, and the kindness he showed to everyone who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, hard work, and devotion that will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
A celebration of Jesse's life will be held on November 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Memory Park, 202 Bessie Price Owen Dr., Montgomery, TX 77356.
