William "Stick" Samuel Castone

AGE: 65 • Hammonton

William "Stick" Samuel Castone, 65, died suddenly on January 18, 2013. A lifelong resident of Hammonton passed with his family at his side at the Atlantic Care Medical Center in Atlantic City. Born September 20, 1947, Bill was predeceased by his parents William and Vera (nee Wright). Beloved husband to Rita (nee Goldberg), beloved father to William Castone (Johnna), Brian Castone, Brett Castone (Melissa), Benjamin Castone (Theresa), and Bethann Castone-Burke (Daniel), beloved grandfather to Brian Jr., Riccia, Liam, and Benjamin Jr., and beloved brother to Joanne Kennish (Michael).

Bill graduated from Hammonton High School (Class of 1965) where he excelled in basketball and football. He set the basketball single game scoring record of 44 points, which still stands today. Shortly after high school, he met the love of his life, Rita Goldberg from Berlin, whom he married in 1969. He attended Glassboro State College where he earned a degree in Education. During this time, he worked at Whitehall Laboratories in Hammonton. Upon graduation, he obtained his first teaching job at Woodbury Junior-Senior High School teaching 6th grade. He then proceeded to teach at Berlin Community School for 27 years where he coached Girls Softball and Boys Basketball. Despite retiring from public education, Bill held the following positions: Teacher, Guidance Director, Vice Principal, Girls Basketball Coach, and Girls Head Track Coach at St. Joseph's High School in Hammonton. While there, he won many South Jersey Parochial Championships. From there, he concluded his career at Our Lady of Grace and St. Anthony's of Padua, both in Camden County. Currently, he was a Boys Basketball Coach at Moorestown Friends School. Bill was a devoted congregation member of St. Joseph's Church, and he volunteered his time to the Hammonton Food Bank. He was also an avid runner, most recently completing the Wildwood Half Marathon with his son and daughter. He was a Philadelphia sports enthusiast and had a love of vintage Western films. However, his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing Thursday evening, from 6pm-9pm and Friday 9:00am -10:30am at Marinella Funeral Home, 102 N. Third St., Hammonton. My wife and I were shocked to hear about the passing of Bill. We had come to know Bill during the 2008-2009 school year at St. Anthony's in Camden. Although Bill was able to stay with the St. Ants family for a short time during that year, Bill proved to be a dedicated and caring educator and engaging prankster. My wife and I touched base with Bill from time to time talking about his beloved family, his amazing wife Rita, and he remembered our child Ryan as an infant. I even recall Bill saying one time that he "loved" his retirement, yet something tells me that Bill would have been at his wits end without having something constructive to do. Bill will always have a place in our hearts and we pass along our deepest condolences to the Castone family.

To all of the Castones: Bill was one of the most dedicated educators and perhaps the most dedicated family man I have ever known. He made me laugh on a daily basis when we worked together, and that means a lot. He may be gone but he lives in the hearts of countless students and colleagues. I haven't seen him every day for years, but I will miss him nevertheless. Saying prayers for him and all of the family...

A piece of Mr. Castone's love for sports, education, and family must be one of the reasons the Sindoni family all enjoyed him so much. His sense of humor, touch of sarcasm, and wit made learning a wonderful experience. He has left lasting memories with all of us and the many other families he has touched. I only wish he knew how much impact he had on so many people! He was loved! I can not express in words how difficult this must be for all of you right now. Hopefully someday, you will take comfort knowing just how many lives he changed...for the better!
Much much love! Trisha "Sindoni Legs" Williams
