George Mitchell Obituary

TELL CITY, Ind. — George Kern Mitchell, 98, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2009, at Oakwood Health Campus in Tell City. He was born in Derby, Ind., on February 11, 1911, to the late John and Violet (Harding) Mitchell. Also preceding him in death is a sister, Frieda Quinn, and brother, Roy Mitchell.

A 1929 graduate of Tell City High School, he had worked as an auto salesman for Werner Motor Co. for 35 years. He was united in marriage on September 2, 1938, to Dorothy Lahee, who survives. George was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Hadi Shrine of Evansville and was Past Patron of The Eastern Star. He also belonged to The Scottish Rite Valley of Evansville and was a member of the Tell City Masonic Lodge 623 where he was a two time Past Master and serving as Master of the Lodge's 50th and 100th Anniversary. He enjoyed baseball, poetry and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mitchell of Tell City; daughter, Sharon Miller and husband, Walt, of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, Ralph Mitchell and wife, Melissa Carter Mitchell, of Troy, Ind.; brother, David Mitchell of Sarasota, Fla.; six grandchildren, Morgan Black, Robyn Mitchell, Jon David Mitchell, Sarah M. Miller, Harrison Kern Mitchell and Sean Patrick Mitchell; nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Tell City. Rev. Lance Lackore will officiate. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home, with a Masonic service at 6 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home.

I was so sorry to learn of your loss. George and my father (Sheik Schierholzer) worked together at Werner's for years. I have fond memories as a child when dad would take me down to the "garage" with him and I would get see George, Pop, Nubby, Fats, Edith, Ronnie, etc etc.
