He was born November 9, 1934, in Holland, Ind., to Ruth Enlow Steinkamp and Hugo Steinkamp Sr. Hugo graduated from Holland High School in 1953, and completed his college degree in finance and accounting at Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1958. After graduation, he joined forces with his family as the third generation operating Steinkamp Warehouses in Huntingburg. Hugo knew by name all the farmers and customers who came to depend on him for his knowledge and his friendship.
His time outside of work was full of family, friends, and widely varied avocations. Hugo loved going to the Indianapolis 500, race walking, reading, and playing golf, and he was a devoted member of Huntingburg United Methodist Church and Unity Church in Naples. He taught himself German to research his genealogy and authored a book about his family heritage. The most important aspect of his life, Hugo's family was the center piece of his activities; he spent years coaching little league baseball and traveling the U.S. with his family and the world with his wife.
Hugo is survived and celebrated by his wife of 50 years, Patty; his son, Scott (Jane) Steinkamp of Huntingburg and their children Melissa, Molly and Mitchell; and his daughter, Terri (Brett) Schultheis of Evansville and their daughters, Emily of Washington, D.C., and Kati of New York City.
Greeting him on the other side will be his parents, Ruth and Hugo Sr., and his favorite aunt, Alice Ring.
Hugo's family would like to express their profound gratitude to the staff of Scenic Hills Care Center. Your love and compassion throughout the past months have been a blessing for which we will forever be thankful.
A funeral service celebrating Hugo's life will be held at 2 p.m. EDT Wednesday, September 16th at the Huntingburg United Methodist Church, followed by private burial.
Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 15th; and also at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Hugo's favorite cause, Shared Abundance (Christian Ministries) at 321 E. 4th Street, Huntingburg, IN 47542.

I had the pleasure of knowing Hugo for over 20 years. He was a pleasure to be around at the LMC functions and I always ran into him in the work- out rooms. May God bless Scott and the family- you all will be in my prayers.

Pat and Family, we are so sorry to hear about Hugo. I always enjoyed having long conversations with Hugo about work, family and travel while we were at P C beach. He was a 'good guy' and will be missed.

Pat, Scott, Jane, and children & all of Scott's family,
Hugo was a blessing. As his former pastors, we can report that Hugo always supported us and if we were going to start a new program and there was no funding available he would in his quiet yet loving way step forward and make sure we had what we needed. We will always remember Hugo's generosity, his sense of humor, his keen wit, and his quiet leadership within the church and his love for God. Our hearts are with you all. Huntingburg has lost a true leader in the community.

How I miss seeing Hugo race walking past the house enroute back to the store. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

I was saddened to hear of my cousin's passing. I will truly miss his annual Christmas phone call. He was always full of news and laughter about his family and their doings. When I was "much" younger, I was always in awe of "Junior", as we called him because he was so grown up and seemed "so cool" to his younger cousins. But, he didn't ignore us because of the age difference. He was so blessed to have such a loving family, and knowing that he's with his parents now can give them comfort. His passing brings home just how precious life is and how much we need to tell each other every single day how much we love them. The words from Josh Grobin's Song, "You Raise Me Up" are very fitting for your husband/father/grandfather.
With Love, Prayers and a Hope for Peace and Understanding though our Christ and God
