Jack Sterett Obituary

Jack Layne Sterett
Evansville, Ind.
Jack Layne Sterett, 88, formerly of Evansville, born Jan. 27, 1924, to James "Boyd" Sterett and Inez Condit, passed away March 5, 2012, in Okla. City.
His family helped establish the Evansville Zoo and Jack's playmates included elephants, tigers, and monkeys. At 8, Jack became a "newsie" and soon had two routes, 6 corners, and 4 boys working for him. He later delivered groceries, worked the counter at Friday's Drug, jerked sodas at Hermann's, and hung out at Phillips' Garage. Graduating with Central's Class of '41, he was in boys'/mixed chorus, the operetta cast, a hall monitor, and worked in the print shop at Mechanic Arts. Trained as a Naval corpsman following Pearl Harbor, Jack was named honor man in hospital corps school, deployed with Marine raider battalions, and served on the U.S.S. Cleveland, sister ship to the U.S.S. Missouri. While applying for 52/20 at the Indiana Employment Service, he met former classmate Evelyn Louise Bryant.
They married 5 weeks, 2 days later on March 27, 1946. Their romance spanned over 62 years, 2 careers, 3 continents, and 6 states. He gave her the world and she gave him 5 children, 15 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Jack survived Evelyn as well as his parents; brother, James, Jr, of Huntsville, AL; and oldest son, Robert.
Services will be March 12th at 10:00 am at the Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in OKC. To view full obituary and leave online condolences, please visit www.ResthavenOKC.com
