Steve was born on January 23, 1960, to Joseph and Sue Pence. He attended St. Theresa Catholic Grade School and graduated from North High School in 1978 where he earned All-State honors in football, ran track, played baseball and was a member of concert choir. He continued his football career at the University of Evansville where he earned a bachelor's degree in business and master's degree in international marketing. While at UE he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. After graduation, Steve moved to Louisville and eventually relocated to Indianapolis where he has worked in various sales positions for the past twenty years. Steve loved all sports, but was an avid Colt's fan, attending all their home games. He was a very outgoing, social person that never met a stranger.
Steve is survived by his companion, Krista Simpson and her daughter, Alyse, of Indianapolis; father, Joseph Pence of Evansville; sister, Susan Kohut (Joe) of Evansville; sister, Gail Moers (Bill) of Haubstadt, Ind.; brother, Greg Pence (Natalie) of Evansville; and nieces and nephews, Lauren, Lindsey and Logan Kohut, Kelsey, Connor and Colton Pence. Aunts and uncles also survive him.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Sue J. Pence and grandparents, Basil and Dorothy Hopf.

I met Steve when were teammates on the University of Evansville football team. I quickly found that Steve loved life and was always thinking ahead. He embraced the younger guys like a big brother. He made us feel welcome and truly made a difference in our lives. His free spirit was an inspiration to others to pursue their own dreams and not be tied down by someone's narrow opinion. Ofcourse, Steve never met a stranger. Over the years I always enjoyed talking with Steve whenever I saw him in Indianapolis because he was still the same likable person with a giving heart. My prayers go out to the Pence family during this time. May God bring peace in a time of sorrow.

I was very sorry to hear of Steve's death. I knew him at UE - I think eveyrone at UE knew Steve - and he was always a funny, friendly and outgoing guy. He was a couple of years older than me, but I remember him as always having time for people, enjoying life and just being a great person. My condolences to his family.

I've known Steve since 1982, just after I started at UE. I suspect that "everyone" at UE knew Steve. My favorite memory is one where Joe, Susan, Matt, and I went on vacation together and Steve had (I think one of the first) a new Bob and Tom cd. He played it over and over and imitated the stories all week long. It never got old, as Steve was hilarious repeating the jokes and stories.
I last saw Steve this summer, and so enjoyed visiting with him. May he rest in peace; and love and sympathies to all of the Pence family.

Susan, Greg (and family),
I am so terribly sorry for your loss. I will be praying for all of you at this time of sorrow. Although I had not seen Steve in many years, I have fond memories of Steve in college. He had a very strong, outgoing personality. I remember him having a great sense of humor yet a sensitive, kind side as well. He never overlooked an opportunity to say hello to everyone on campus. I remember Mike and I going with him and the Louks' to the Pacers game years ago when Scott Haffner was playing for them. Steve was having fun, living life fully. Although I know he sruggled with health problems in more recent years, I'm sure he grabbed on and tried to grab all the gusto life had to offer! I know he will be greatly missed. Please know that all who know you and remember Steve share in your grief and sorrow. You are not alone, and I pray for God to grant you all the peace and serenity that His loving arms can give at this time of need.
With Sincere Sympathy,
Susan Milligan

Stephen Pence was a great friend of mine. He made coming to work not only tolerable, but unforgettable, as we would talk for hours at a time. I would help him with computer entries and data management, and he helped me survive in a challenging field that he had mastered. He taught me to remain humble at all times, and to be kind and open with everyone. He was dedicated to his work and his community. He enjoyed life and celebrated it, and most certainly made me feel the same way. He will be missed.

I went to grade school at St. Theresa with Steve. He was the class clown. He kept us all laughing and wondering how someone could be so quick witted. He will be missed.
