Charles Hartrum, 71, of Bucyrus, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Avita Health System Bucyrus.
He was born in Bucyrus on September 23, 1953 and was a 1971 graduate of Bucyrus High School. On November 21, 1981 he married Darlene “Dot" Hensley and from that marriage came his only daughter, Holly. Charlie spent many years working at both Checkmate and Baja Boats until a stroke left him unable to continue.
Music played a large portion in Charlie’s life and as a gifted bass guitar player, he had the privilege of playing in various bands over the years. His most successful venture was being a longtime member of Velvet Rush. They traveled the state performing at a variety of venues and events, recorded an album and also opened a show for the legendary Don Williams. Unfortunately, due to his stroke, Charlie’s playing days also ended.
Charlie looked forward to his annual vacation with his daughter and her family, sharing some really good times while visiting Niagara Falls, going boating on Lake Erie and his favorite destination being Gatlinburg, TN. He often reminisced of former years and good times had while socializing with friends at Wren’s Nest and VFW 1078. Charlie was a member of the VFW and liked volunteering for their events. He never turned down a cup of Maxwell House Coffee and in more recent years, he liked to relax in front of the TV with a big bowl of peach flavored ice cream while watching old westerns. Though a bit stubborn at times, Charlie was a very generous soul and will be missed by his family and some close friends.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Jeremy Stratton; grandchildren, Ashton, Breanna, Braden and Bailee as well as family and friends. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Donald G. Hartrum and Joyce Y. (Kissling) Presler.
Though no public service will be held for Charlie, if friends so desire, donations can be made payable to a charity of the donor’s choice. These gifts will be accepted through Wise Funeral Service and online memories are encouraged to be shared on his guestbook page at www.wisefuneral.com.
