Stephen F. "Steve" Lemke, though small in stature, "lived large and infused fun into all he did." He embraced life fully for 88 years, centered around his faith, family, and an unwavering devotion to the Marion community he so dearly loved. On Monday, October 27, 2025, Steve quietly slipped from this life into the arms of his Lord and Savior, at home and surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness.
Born on February 20, 1937, in Marion, Ohio, Steve was the younger of two sons of a farming family of the late Ralph M. Lemke and Eva Lucille (Beckett) Lemke. He graduated from Claridon High School with the Class of 1955.
During high school, Steve met the love of his life, Marilyn "Jean" Haley, who was a grade below him. The two became inseparable sweethearts and were married on April 20, 1958, at his home church, Liberty United Methodist Church in Kirkpatrick. They shared 65 wonderful years of marriage and lovingly raised two sons, Mark and Lee. Jean preceded him in death on December 8, 2023.
Following graduation, Steve began his career at the Commercial Steel plant in Marion, working his way up to X-ray technician. Soon after, he entered the world of banking-starting as a teller at Marion County Bank-and quickly rose through the ranks due to his integrity, intelligence, and dedication. Over the years, Steve served as Vice President at Marion County Bank, President of the Federal Land Bank Association of Marion, Crawford, and Wyandot Counties, and later as Senior Vice President of private banking at Bank One (now JPMorgan Chase). He also taught banking at Ohio University and was known as a gifted mentor who blended warmth with professionalism. A man of style and precision, Steve was always impeccably dressed and had a lifelong appreciation for fine writing instruments.
Throughout a large part of his banking career, Steve and his sons also continued to farm 160 acres across two parcels of land, reflecting his deep-rooted appreciation for hard work, stewardship of the land, and the values he was raised with. Farming was not only a livelihood but also a labor of love that kept the Lemke family grounded-literally and figuratively.
After retiring from banking, Steve continued to enjoy connecting with people through sales. He joined McDaniel Automotive, where he served as a private representative, sharing his enthusiasm, integrity, and personable charm with customers and colleagues alike.
Steve's faith was the foundation of his life. Raised in the Liberty United Methodist Church, he and Jean were faithful members there before being led by the Holy Spirit to join Marion First Church of the Nazarene for many years. They devoted themselves to this congregation in more recent years. Steve's sons fondly remember his nightly Bible readings and the gentle wisdom he shared from Scripture. He also served as a member of Gideon's International, spreading the Word of God with humility and conviction.
Deeply committed to his community, Steve devoted countless hours to civic service. His leadership and philanthropy touched many organizations, including the Marion Rotary Club, Marion General Hospital Board, United Way, Marion CanDo!, the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Ridgedale Board of Education-serving as president of most, if not all, of these boards. In recognition of his dedication, Steve received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce in 2000.
Among his proudest accomplishments, Steve completed a cross-country bike ride across the United States in 2002 with the Wandering Wheels Club-a 40-day journey that produced cherished memories and stories he loved to share.
An avid photographer, Steve captured life's beauty through his lens. His camera accompanied him everywhere-from scenic travels to his grandchildren's sporting events, where he happily served as "team photographer." His photos reflected the joy and wonder he found in everyday moments.
Steve and Jean shared a love of adventure, often traveling with their sons across the U.S.-notably a two-week road trip through the western states in their Oldsmobile. Later, they enjoyed memorable trips to Europe and an Alaskan cruise, each journey deepening their bond.
Steve's family affectionately remarked, "Without Mom, there would be no Dad." The love Steve and Jean shared for each other, their faith, and their family defined their lives. Steve was a mentor, a difference maker, and a role model-respected for his wisdom, admired for his humor, and loved for his unwavering loyalty. His storytelling and laughter brought warmth to every gathering, and his friendships were lifelong treasures.
Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Mark (Terri) Lemke of Loudonville and Lee Lemke of Marion; six grandchildren, Corey (Kate) Lemke, Kyle (Taurey) Lemke, Keith (Kaitlin) Lemke, Troy Lemke, Renee (Ridge) Durbin, and Laura Lemke; ten great-grandchildren, Weston, Kennedy, Kendall, and Khloe Lemke, Rowan, Jack, and Knox Lemke, Oli and Harlo Lemke, and Layne Durbin; three sisters-in-law, Jane Miller, Joan Shelton, and Janet (Tom) Kightlinger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, Steve was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Ed (Janet) Lemke; and brothers-in-law, Bob Miller and Eddie Shelton.
