Verl C. Homier

Holgate - Verl C. Homier passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025, at Vancrest Nursing Home in Holgate at the age of 96. Born May 15, 1929, to Sylvester & Germain (Swary) Homier in New Bavaria, Ohio. On July 15, 1950, he married Merna Ann Follett in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria. They shared 72 years together before her passing on August 7, 2022.

Verl started out as a shift foreman at Campbell Soup Company before he chose the lifelong occupation of over-the-road truck driving. He was a volunteer fireman for the New Bavaria Fire Department for many years and earned the rank of Captain. He was a member of the Hamler Heritage Society where he provided many of his carpentry skills to their projects, including the Veteran's Memorial in front of the historical Hamler, OH Village Town Hall. He was a lifelong member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria. For many years during the Christmas season, he donned the Santa Claus suit hand-crafted by his wife and entertained the children at the Filling Home of Mercy near Napoleon, OH and also strolled through the village of New Bavaria handing out bags of candy at each household for the holidays. In his leisure time he enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians/Guardians baseball games, the Ohio State Buckeyes football and put many of 1,000 piece puzzles together.

Survived by his children: Michael Homier, Defiance; David Homier, Ayersville; and Patricia (Wayne) Barnes, Hamler. Daughters-in-law, Jo Homier, Archbold and Sherry Homier, state of Texas; 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-laws; Patti Homier, New Bavaria and Lavonne Homier, Ottawa. Verl was preceded in death by his parents, mother & father in-law Arthur & Mary Follett, sons John, Bruce and Christopher; grandchildren Justin and Jamie; brothers Marvin, Tom and Ted and sister Carolyn Franzdorf.

Friends will be received in the Zachrich Family Funeral Home of Holgate on Monday, December 29, 2025, from 5-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria with Father Nick Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Filling Home of Mercy, Napoleon, OH, Sacred Heart Church, New Bavaria, OH or a charity of the donor's choice.
