A year ago, on February 20th, the world became a better place. The deep pain caused by Nina's death just 2 weeks earlier was eased. The normal cycle of life was going on. The bright eyes of Ava Paige Backert were open.
And for 5 months, life was wonderful for all of us who had the opportunity to hold this beautiful child, to see her smile, to hear her laugh. To feel her love.
But then the inexplicable happened. For some reason we will never understand, God took her from us. God caused us all unspeakable pain.
But please understand we are the ones that feel the pain. Ava is safe and happy with all of our loved ones who have passed on. She's with Judy, and Nina and Grampy, with Hank, Eugene, Harold, and all the other family and friends we miss so much. We are the ones left alone, suffering, feeling the loss. Asking: Why?
I don't think that there is an answer to that question of why. All I know is that we are all still here, we're not as happy as we should be, but we are all still here. And we are all lucky enough to have each other. We need to love each other and find a way to carry on, to laugh and sing and dance and have fun and make the most out of every day we have left together.
The only way to honor Ava is to remember those 5 wonderful months and the joy she brought. She didn't bring sadness, she brought joy. We can't let sadness be the only way we remember her. We can't let our lives be forever shattered by her death, but instead remember that we are all better for those 5 months of life.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING A MONTH NOW TO TO WRITE SOMETHING WITHOUT CRYING. I FIND IMPOSSIBLE. I MISS MY LITTLE AVA MAY BROWN WITH ALL MY HEART. I'M SO MAD AT GOD, THAT I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO FOR ANSWERS. I KNOW THAT HE NEEDS LITTLE ANGELS,BUT WHY DID HE HAVE TO TAKE MINE? WHO DO I PRAY TO IF I'M MAD AT HIM? THE DAYS DAYS GO BY AND THE EMPTINESS IS STILL SO DEEP. PEOPLE SAY THAT IT TAKES A LITTLE TIME. I STILL DON'T THINK THAT'S TRUE....I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THIS!!!I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT GOD WILL GIVE ME A SIGN THAT SHE IS WITH HER GREAT AUNT JUDY, SO I CAN FEEL SOME COMFORT IN KNOWING THAT SHE IS BEING LOVED AS MUCH AS WE COULD HAVE LOVED HER HERE. I LOVE AND MISS YOU SO MUCH......

Hi stinkerbell,
I can't believe you have been an Angel for a month now. I miss you so much. I think about you all the time. I wish I could hold you & see those gorgeous eyes & that huge smile again. Just a year ago everyone was finding out that you were on your way & now.....
Ava, we are all going crazy without you, please help us thru this. We're numb, can't breathe and the sadness is so thick that no one is the same anymore. We all love & need you so much. People still tell us that it will get easier, but it just gets harder & harder everyday. I'm still in shock & I hate the way it feels. The pain is unbearable.
I hear you paid your sister a visit. I think mommy would like one too.

Melissa and Mike,
Ava was a gift from God for you and all who love you. He took her back and our hearts broke in pain. But we know deep in our hearts that she is okay and is looking out for you guys. I was very lucky to have held her the times I did, I thank God for giving me the chance to have known her and loved her. We will miss her and love her for ever.
The pain will get easier.
Ava you are missed by your whole family.

Ava, I will always remember you, especially your big, beautiful, eyes. It's raining now and the sky is gray and overcast. But the clouds will clear and when they do, we will all look up and see those bright eyes sparkling in the sky.
Love you forever,
Uncle Stephen
