Bertha Chayes Obituary

Bertha Chayes
Bertha Chayes passed peacefully on Thursday, April 5th at the Fairfield Jewish Home. She had celebrated her 100th birthday in September.
Bertha was born in Vienna, Austria at the beginning of World War l. After completing "gymnasium," a college preparatory secondary school, she enrolled in the University of Vienna to prepare for a career as a pharmacist. Forced to emigrate to the United States as a result of the Holocaust, she married, raised two daughters, and worked for many years as an administrative assistant to the lead counsel at INA, now CIGNA. A life long learner, Bertha audited numerous college classes and traveled widely after retiring.
Mrs. Chayes was predeceased by her loving husband Morris and her first grandchild, Jonathan Singer. Her memory will be cherished by her two daughters, Judy Singer (David) and Naomi Goldman (Mark), six grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank her remarkable care taker, Joan Zelinsky, and the entire staff at the Fairfield Jewish Home for the superb and loving care provided to Bertha. Contributions to Hadassah or the Fairfield Jewish Home are appreciated.
A Graveside service will be held on Sunday April 9, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Beth Isreal Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ. Condolences may be offered at www.leopgallagherstamford.com

To the loving wonderful family of " Omi" . One of the most memorable people i have had the pleasure of knowing over the years. She made my day so many times and helped me to become the nurse that i am. I loved to hear her stories about all the noble things that she had done in her life. And she was so wonderful with children. Even my son when i brought him in on occasion. She was engaging to all. And was loved by so many. And she was a good friend to me. You are all very blessed to have had such a matriarch as a role model in your life. And i can see so much of her leadership and loving caring ways in both of you, Judy, and Naomi. She enjoyed your visits and calls so much and espevially all the grandbabies!❤❤❤ May God richly bless you all! Until we meet again. Love "Jack a la"

Bertha was a very dear lady. I only knew her for a short time but I will not forget the first time we met. I looked at her and smiled and she put her hand to her mouth and blew me a kiss. I got that kiss every time I saw her. Peace be with you because she is now at peace. Pat Conley, Volunteer at J S S.
