Carolyn Akter, age 80, of Shelton, entered into rest on Friday, September 26, 2014 in the West Haven Veteran's Hospital.
Mrs. Akter was born in Shelton on May 5, 1934, daughter of the late Samuel and Theresa (DeMartino) Ragozzine. A graduate of Albertus Magnus College, Class of '56, she served in England, California, and Massachusetts over the course of her career. Mrs. Akter was a retired commander with the US Navy and proudly served her country. She was one of the first female officers in the United States Navy to hold a command. Her last post was at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA.
She went on to become a school teacher and retired as the Head of the Guidance Department for Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury. She was also a member of the Yale University Women's Organization.
She is the beloved mother of Emre Akter and his wife Lee, cherished grandmother of
Anna, Theresa, John Paul, Gianna, and George , and loving sister of Theresa Perri and the late Jean Macary.
Friends may greet her family on Monday from 4 to 7 PM in the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton. On Tuesday her funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30AM for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:45 AM in St. Joseph Church, Shelton. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery, Derby.
At the request of her family memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Grammar School, which she attended, at 430 Coram Ave, Shelton CT 06484.
