Coreen Cook Obituary

Cook, Coreen
Coreen Nilsen Cook of Trumbull, CT, beloved wife of the late Dr. Robert A. Cook, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford, CT. She was 99. Born on April 21, 1914 to Norwegian immigrants Harold and Hilda Nilsen, she was raised in Chicago with sister, Evelyn. Coreen graduated from North Park College in 1935. She married her sweetheart, Robert Cook, on September 24, 1935. She stood by his side as they served the Lord together in ministry over the years. Coreen enjoyed gardening, entertaining, and taking care of her family-all of which she did with selfless love and diligence. She had a deep love for the Lord, His work and His Word. Nothing gave her more joy than seeing people turn their lives over to Christ. A woman of strength and graciousness, kindness, dignity, and humility, she will be missed by her family and all those who knew her. She reminded us that serving the Lord, even with all of its sacrifice, is eternally worthwhile. Coreen was predeceased to Glory by her husband of 57 years, Robert A. Cook; sister and brother-in-law, Torrey and Evelyn Johnson; sister-in-law, Mildred Cook; daughter, Carolyn Cook Borrink and daughter, Marilyn Cook Parry. She is survived by her daughter, Lois Cook Gillern; son-in-law, Michael Gillern; grandchildren, Heidi Borrink Corrente, Christopher Borrink, Melissa Parry Ritchie and spouses; Grete Gillern, Robert Gillern; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Joshua Borrink; niece, Arlene Johnson Yoder, and nephew, Torrey Johnson, Jr. and spouses. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Coreen's husband's ministry: Walk With The King, Inc., PO Box 43, Trumbull, CT 06611. AS A MEMBER OF THE KING'S COLLEGE STAFF IN THE 1960'S, I HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF COREEN AND BOB COOK. THE YEARS AT KING'S WERE AN IMPORTANT PART OF MY LIFE. I HAVE LOST TRACK OF MOST OF THE PEOPLE I MET THERE, BUT AM LOOKING FORWARD TO A GLAD REUNION IN HEAVEN. I HAVE WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS STAFF PARTIES AT BRAEMOOR, CAROLYN'S WEDDING AND RECEPTION, FILLING IN FOR LOUISE ALFORS WHEN SHE TOOK A VACATION, AND SO MUCH MORE. I WORKED IN THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICE FOR TERRY MARTIN AND ONLY LEFT BECAUSE I'M FROM INDIANA AND AN ONLY CHILD AND MOTHER PERSUADED ME MY FATHER WOULDN'T LIVE MUCH LONGER...HE LIVED ANOTHER 40 YEARS...BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY.

THIS WEEK A GROUP OF SENIORS FROM CHURCH VISITED WINONA LAKE AND TOURED THE BILLY SUNDAY HOME AND CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY MUSEUM. AT THE MUSEUM I SAW THE PHOTO OF "MA" SUNDAY, BILLY GRAHAM AND DR.COOK. WHAT MEMORIES! I HEARD BILLY GRAHAM IN PERSON WHEN HE CAME TO WINONA THE FIRST TIME AFTER HIS SUCCESS IN CALIFORNIA. "MA" SUNDAY HAS BEEN HOME WITH THE LORD SINCE 1957, AND DR. BOB LEFT US TOO YOUNG, BUT I WAS SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT COREEN ONLY WENT HOME A MONTH AGO. YOU WERE ALL BLESSED TO HAVE HER FOR SUCH A LONG TIME.

I HAVE A COPY OF THE PHOTO OF DR. BOB, BILLY GRAHAM AND MRS. SUNDAY, BUT YOU PROBABLY DO TOO. IF YOU'D LIKE ONE, LET ME KNOW. I STILL HAVE CONTACTS WITH SOME OF THE STUDENTS I KNEW AT KING'S. I KNOW THE CAMPUS IN BRIARCLIFF HAS BEEN BURNED AND THE COLLEGE MOVED TO NYC, BUT THE WORK OF THE LORD AT KING'S MOVES ON. SINCERE SYPATHIES TO EVERYONE WHO KNEW AND LOVED DR. BOB. ALICE (LECHLITNER), CULP, PONTIOUS. I LOST MY LATE HUSBAND, BUT GOD HAS GIVEN ME SOMEONE TO SHARE THE LAST LAP OF THE JOURNEY HOME.

Though I never met Mrs. Cook, I feel as though I am a member of her family, thanks to her many efforts along side her husband, to bring blessing upon blessing to listeners like me throughout the years.

Both Sue and I share the loss of your sweet and wonderful mother. We will always cherish the wonderful times we had with Coreen these past few years. These were very special for both of us and will always be remembered in our hearts. We rest in the fact that she is in heaven with Jesus and members of her family and friends who have gone on before. May God be with you.

I know the loss of a parent; still adore, love and admire "Doctor Cook" and of course, Mrs. Cook as well--As a 1985 grad of King's, you can't think TKC without remembering them. Bless your family as you move forward and thank God for His assurance we WILL be reunited in the eternal afterlife.

What a wonderful woman Mrs. Cook was! She was so willing to warmly and graciously open her home to us students at King's! She and Dr. Cook were a great pair! I'm glad they're reunited - and that we'll get to see them again and spend eternity together in heaven! My heart goes out to Lois, her daughter, as she grieves the loss of her dear mom.

My condolences to the entire family. She was a lovely wife to our dearly beloved college President. I remember meeting her the first time at a freshman orientation event at your house in 1977. She (as well as Dr. Cook) always remembered our names.

My deepest sympathies to the Cook family. Though family & friends will miss her, I smile at the thought of her not only with her Lord, but her beloved husband, together again, praising their Lord together as they did in their lives here. I was privileged to know both of them as a student at TKC, 'graduating with them' in 1985 as they retired. I look forward to seeing them again in glory!
