Daniel Burns Obituary

Daniel Burns
08/31/2024
Daniel Joseph Burns, devoted husband of Susan Burns of 40 years, passed away peacefully in his home in Leland, North Carolina on August 31, 2024. He was 67 years old.
Dan was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 10, 1957, to James T. Burns, a United States Army Ranger veteran of WWII, and Jean Galog Burns.
Raised in Setauket, Long Island (NY) with his five siblings Jack, Kathy, Carol, Nancy, and Jimmy, Dan cherished his childhood, and the scores of neighborhood children whom he played non-stop basketball and baseball. Many would remain lifelong friends.
Dan graduated from Ward Melville High School in 1975, where he played basketball and baseball. He was a terrific athlete and tenacious competitor.
Venturing south for college, Dan attended Jacksonville State University in Alabama, graduating in 1981 with a B.A. in Political Science and History. On campus, he met the love of his life, Susan Isbell, of Moody, Alabama. They were married on October 2, 1983.
Dan and Susan returned north to Stratford, Connecticut, where they raised their two children, Ryan Patrick Burns and Erin Elizabeth (Burns) Chafee. A dynamic member of the Stratford community, Dan coached youth soccer, basketball, and baseball. He was an active member of the Stratford United Methodist Church, and a benevolent neighbor.
With unrelenting work ethic, and selfless leadership, Dan oversaw a 25-person manufacturing team as Vice President of Operations at Z-Medica, a medical supply company.
Blessed with an innovative mind, Dan had an ability to approach and solve problems through a unique lens. He co-invented QuikClot Hemostatic Gauze, a bleeding control technology now used on the battlefield by the U.S. military, carried by police and EMS, and used in hospitals.
Dan retired from Corning Inc. in Wilmington, North Carolina in July 2024, where he worked on the production of fiber optics.
Avid golfer, devoted Mets fan, and recent boat owner, Dan was constantly going, constantly living, and constantly loving his family.
He leaves behind his wife, Susan Burns, son, Ryan Burns, daughter-in-law, Aubrey Burgess-Burns, daughter, Erin Chafee, son-in-law, Sam Chafee, mother-in-law, Eleanor Isbell, his five siblings, numerous cousins, friends, and neighbors.
Visiting hours will be held at Stratford United Methodist Church, 2600 Main Street, Stratford, CT, on Thursday, September 12th, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
The funeral will be held at Stratford United Methodist Church, 2600 Main Street, Stratford, CT, on Friday, September 13th, at 10:00 a.m.

Not sure what to say?

Susan, Frank and I had hoped to attend Dan's rememberance but both of us are elderly and what used to be easy has become very hard.
However, I want you to know how crushed we are to hear about his passing.
To say Dan was special and uniquely beautiful in spirit, feels so inadequate.
His soul was the very soul of Z-Medica.
His ability to accomplish with ease, what staggered everyone else was nothing short of miraculous.
One Friday afternoon the FDA walked in for a surprise inspection.
Our regulatory guy quit and walked out.
Dan gathered his forces and literally worked every second until Monday morning to make us compliant, saving our FDA approval.
But it's his huge heart, bigger smile and positive outlook that stands out most for me.
Please accept, from Frank and myself, the certain knowledge that, without Dan, Quikclot would not be out saving lives today. We'll never forget him.

I knew Dan as a co-worker and friend. So sad and unexpected. He always seemed like the pinnacle of health. He was very active, walking all of the time, playing golf and basketball. He was a great leader at Z-Medica. The staff loved him and he was able to grow the manufacturing capacities of QuikClot to satisfy the growing needs of hospitals and the military. I had fun playing golf with him, he came to listen to my band play a few times, and enjoyed many happy hours together. Rest in Peace. This was a total shock and I cannot stop thinking about. You raised two good kids. My condolences to Susan, Ryan and Erin. Remember to always hit 'em straight.

His smile and laughter will not be dimmed from our memories, nor his sweet love for Susan, Erin, Sam, Ryan and Aubrey. He always said "Whats not to be happy about?" And he surely meant it. You will be missed, Dan Burns, dear friend and neighbor, who became family to us, you were loved by all.
