Thank you all for your touching and wonderful messages and words of encouragement.

My heart has been warmed by the student tales. Many learned about the combustion engine from David. He even "hauled" an engine to the school to help them learn.

Another wrote of a trip to Fairfield U at night to view the stars and their placement in the heavens and the beauty of it all.

I was blessed to have had an Uncle like Dave. I will miss him and am glad that the kids and I were able to see Pat and Dave on our latest trip up to Connecticut (and dine at Pepe's Pizza).

I hope there is some comfort in knowing that he will continue to be with you always. After 23 years gone, my mom (Aunt Ruthie) still touches me through memories that present themselves at the most appropriate times.

I pray for your comfort during this hard time. My love to you all.

When we're young, it's our teachers who make the greatest impression on us. Mr. Protheroe was bigger than life to us and he was the kind of young teacher at Grasmere in 1955 who wasn't afraid to get a little sweaty with us on the playground or a little pithy with us in the classroom. He read stories to us, praised us for our efforts and nailed us for our transgressions. Later, I became a teacher, too, and also "fool around" with classic cars. He's still alive inside of me...and that will never change. I can see him now........

Mr. Protheroe holds a very special place in my heart. He was my dear science teacher in 7th and 8th grade. He had a way of making science real exemplified by the automobile engine he hauled into school to teach us how it worked. I will always remember him fondly. He was a wonderful teacher and a very nice person. Blessings to all of his loved ones.
