Donald Butterworth Obituary

Donald Butterworth
Donald Charles Butterworth was born on December 12, 1941 in San Francisco, CA to Alma May Long. He died unexpectedly on May 24, 2021 from injuries sustained in a fall at his home.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 29 years, Barbara; his brothers, James and Maureen (PA) and Robert (ME); his children Kim and Steven (Adler) Raeford, NC; Tracey and Frank (Rossi), Madison, CT; Dean and Wendy, Port Angeles, WA; Donna Butterworth and her partner Frank Rothstein (Eatonton, GA); and his step-children Debbie and Pete Pirulli (Monroe, CT); Pam and Mike Procyk (Monroe, CT). Grandchildren are Samantha, Rebecca, and Kira Adler; Marissa, Andrew, Luke, Craig, and Jason Rossi; Aidan, Grant and Sarah Butterworth; Zack and Jake Pirulli; and Madison and Carly Procyk; and his niece Rachel Crosby who was very special to him. He was predeceased by his mother Alma May (Long) Butterworth, his father Lloyd George Butterworth and his first wife Karen (Crosby) Butterworth.
Don attended Stratford High School and was a graduate of the class of 1959. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserve and was also Past Master of Masonic Temple Washington Lodge No. 19 AF & AM. Don worked hard his entire life, starting his own business with Raymond Scheck in 1972. Butterworth & Scheck, Inc grew from very humble beginnings to a successful business that supports many families. Don loved a good project and always needed to have one or more underway. He was always willing to offer a helping hand and loved spending time with his family and supporting their hobbies and passions in any way that he could.
Husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend, business owner, swimming coach – to all these roles Don brought kindness and generosity. He always had a smile, a kind word, and a caring hand for everyone.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Don on Friday, May 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church, 2301 Main Street, Stratford CT 06615.

Don was a long time friend since we met at the Stratford YMCA swim Team. He coached all three of my children, Julie, Heather, and Danielle. His easy going manner was well suited to coaching young children. I'm sure he will be be missed not only by his family, but also all the lives he touched. The Pfeiffer Family

Uncle Don was very special to my family. He was always there for my mom and dad. He always remembered my birthday. I will miss his calls and texts. He was the last person who could tell me more about what my dad was like growing up. He shared those me.ories with me when we spoke.
He is one of my favorite people.

My deepest sympathies to Barb, Kim, Tracy, Dean, Donna, and the whole family.

Dear Barbara and Family, So sorry to hear of Don's passing.
He was one of my earliest friends in life, having grown up a few streets apart in Stratford. I moved to to the west coast early in my adulthood and did not have close contact with Don. However, through the years, thanks to Dan and Terry, and Gordie and Peggy, I was relatively up to date. The last time I and my wife were in Stratford, spring of 2012, we had the pleasure of meeting you, and seeing Don. He was so much the same as always - back to the young years! I also had the pleasure of talking to him by phone early this year. I believe he was on one of his jobsites, so it had to be short conversation. I will miss him!
I pray that Good will bless you and your family with with the strength to help you through these difficult days. God bless Don!

Dear Barbara and Family and the Butterworth and Scheck family. My condolences and prayers are with you all. Twenty plus years ago when I came to Nyala I met Don, of course in an emergency, and I realized this was a good man and company. Over the course of the years and several projects we became friends and he always took the time for us to check on family and maintain our friendship. He is a true professional was patient with guys who asked LOTS of questions and took the time to teach along the way. THANK YOU for sharing him with us. He will be sorely missed here but I suspect God will keep him busy working on others!
Be strong in the Lord and he will provide for you in your time of need.

Dear Barb,
We have felt very blessed to have met you and Don through the simple act of walking our dogs each day. There are many happy memories of sitting in your side yard as Teddy and Molly played together. We extend our sympathies to you and all your families at this sudden loss and will miss seeing Don on our walks. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and we are here to help when you need it.

Whenever I would see the Butterworth and Scheck I would stop and ask if Don was there. If he was able to, Don would stop what he was doing and come over and chat for a couple minutes. He always made a person feel special. His smile was contagious. Heaven is lucky to get a man like him. My prayers will include Don and Barb and his family. I am so sorry.

Barbara and family,
Our most sincere condolences. Being of the same generation Don and I shared similar values on life's more important issues. Family of course was always first and friends running a close second. He always had an ear for my tales of woe and always was a kind compassionate guy who one can tell just by making eye contact was genuine to the core! It has been said a hundred times over that you never know what you have till it is gone and sadly once again my wife and I are being reminded of just that.
Respectfully,
Freddie and Sharon Dapp

Dear Barbara, Jim, Robbie, and all family - It is with such sadness that I read about Don's passing; we've been in periodic contact since we were kids on Short Beach in Stratford, where our parents were privileged to have cottages then! My heart and love goes out to you all! I have no words of advice as we all deal with the passing of loved ones in our own way. Please, if you can, stay strong and believe that this was the way things should be. He was such a good person in our world, I know that our Lord has a special place for him and that we will see him again, there, when we all reunite. My very sincere sympathy to you all. With much Love......

I moved to Connecticut from Georgia when I was only 7 yrs old, away from all the friends and family that I had known. My very first friend in Connecticut was his daughter Donna. We became instant friends, and I spent most of my time hanging out at the Butterworth House, so much so that I was known as "Bonnie Butterworth" and when Donna came to my house she was known as "Donna Thompson". The Butterworths always made me feel like I was part of the family. Tracey and Kim used to babysit my sister and I. Our families were close. We moved to Pennsylvania when I was 16. The hardest thing I had to do was leave my new found family behind. But through the years we have stayed in touch and even though Donna and I don't see each other as often just one phone call to each other and it's like we were never separated. I will always remember Don as a hard worker, kind, and approachable and easy to talk to. He was a great teacher and was very encouraging, building confidence in me to do my best in swimming and in life. Such a hard worker, such a mentor to many, a father, a grandfather, and a friend to so many people he will most certainly be missed. Sending prayers to the whole Butterworth clan through this difficult time our friends and family are praying for you all. Don, we will miss your smile. Until we see you again one day in heaven.
