George Hebner Obituary

George Hebner, III
George Hebner III, 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Southport, Connecticut, on June 2, 2022, surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 17, 1931, the eldest son of George Hebner II and Elizabeth Heuisler and later was married to his wife Anne (Mace) Hebner for 62 years; they shared a special bond for adventure. He was a polished gentleman with an even-keeled personality, quick wit, and magnetic smile.
As a young man, George moved around the world; his stepfather, General John Lentz, was stationed overseas after World War II. His mother "Libby" and siblings Nancy, Becky, Philip, and Stanley attended boarding schools in Germany and other parts of Europe. George later joined the military where he was stationed in Panama. Ultimately, he arrived back in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Loyola University, where he received an undergraduate degree in Business.
It was in Baltimore where George met his beautiful wife Anne while she was attending nursing school at Church Home Hospital. It was a blind date set up by George's roommate Jim Stevens, and Anne's best friend Bootsy Hines. They were married on January 1, 1960, moved to New York City to finish his graduate degree in Business, and to work and start their family. They had three children, George, Tarver, and John. They eventually moved to their current home in Southport, CT. They quickly settled in, joined the Hunt Club, made lifelong friends and created a rich environment for nurturing their family. George operated in many fields, from banking, to sports product management at AMF, to electronics and radio communications. He was extremely knowledgeable about technology and an adept learner who always kept current on the latest software systems and games.
George had great enthusiasm for his hobbies and was a self-taught woodworker and fine craftsman. He made model planes, beautiful kayaks, hunting decoys, and several boats - one that is still used today. He was an ardent reader and surrounded himself with books. He also had a need for speed. Starting with his 1959 Abarth Fiat 2200 which he used at Limerock, to multiple motorcycles and Corvette. But above these, George's deepest appreciation was for being on the water. He was an avid fisherman and extremely passionate about sailing. He was a member of the Pequot Yacht Club for many years and traveled frequently to their house in Nantucket to be near the ocean and the fantastic fishing there. His love for the sea was something he was dedicated to share with everyone in the family. He frequently drafted his grandchildren for fishing and sailing duties every chance he got. Whether it was with fishing rods in the water, paddling a kayak, sitting strong in the captain's chair, or dozing off with a book on his lap, we will always remember him fondly for his playful sense of humor and zest for living life.
George Hebner III is survived by his wife Anne Mace Hebner; children George Hebner IV (spouse Denise Creighton Hebner), Anne Tarver Harris (spouse Michael David Harris), John Mace Hebner (spouse Sally Sutphin Hebner); grandchildren Elizabeth, George, Samuel, Briley, Lucy, Robert, and Anna; and his great-grandson Grant. He is also survived by his sister Becky Kemsley, brother Stanley Hebner and a variety of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Mass will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, August 6th at St. Anthony Church, 149 South Pine Creek Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
