Helen Hughes Hamm
Helen H. Hamm, age 75, of Fairfield, beloved wife of Robert E. Hamm and a dedicated educator for much of her adult life, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Smilow Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Born in New York City and raised in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Ellen Hughes. She had been a Fairfield resident for the past 48 years. Helen graduated from Stamford High School, received a B.A. degree from Danbury State Teachers College and a Master's degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport.
She began her teaching career in Greenwich where she worked for five years then taught in the Fairfield school system for 25 years, teaching primarily first grade at Stratfield Elementary School.
Following her retirement, Helen taught part-time at Trinity Episcopal Nursery School. She served as secretary of the Retired Educators of Fairfield (REF) since 2012.
Helen was an active parishioner for many years at Our Lady of the Assumption Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and sang in the Resurrection Choir. Earlier, she was a member of Assumption's Emmaus community and served as editor of its Good News Letter.
Helen was a loyal and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her deep faith was important to her, and she will be fondly remembered as an educator and nurturer who loved spending time with children. She would often look after former students, many of whom still reach out to her to this day.
Survivors in addition to Robert, her loving husband of over 50 years, are two beloved sons, Douglas Hamm and Rebecca Siwicki of Stamford and Gregory Hamm and his wife, Catherine, and their daughter, Katelyn, of Boston and her devoted sister and best friend, Johanna Hughes of Fairfield.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 545 Stratfield Road, Fairfield. Interment will be private. Friends may call Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.

Helen and I met at Stamford High School in 1958 and maintained our friendship during all these years...through sharing college experiences, bridal showers, weddings, raising children, going to high school reunions and being invited to her numerous family gatherings.....Further, I also had a very special relationship with her Dad, Frank Hughes, which gave me such a feeling of familiarity with her family. She was a special person who loved and took an interest in people. We send our thought and prayers to the family she leaves behind......Judy & Richard Henchar.....Port Orange FL

Mrs. Hamm was my 1st grade teacher at Stratfield School. She was a great teacher and a great person as well. All of the kids were fortunate to have her as a teacher. My prayers and condolences to Greg and the rest of the family.

Mrs. Hamm was an amazing teacher. She was my first grade teacher in 1996. Years later when I graduated from high school she sent me a letter detailing all of my preferences, hopes, and dreams from that year. Her dedication and caring time means the world to me. May she rest in peace.

I am really sorry to hear of Mrs. Hamm's passing. I had her in first grade and it was probably my favorite year of school ever. She listened to all my rambling stories and encouraged me to become a writer, was very kind to my family when my Mom had cancer and even pulled a few of my baby teeth. I still have my name in Braille and our class picture. Rest in Peace Mrs. Green Eggs and Hamm.

A light in our world and a happy song in our hearts, a smiling joyful face. The light is a little dimmer but we see it in our memories and that holds us up.

While I didn't have Mrs. Hamm for 1st grade at Stratfield, my sister Amy did! She got to know her, & our family over the years - she was at my bridal shower & wedding in 2016! I was very lucky to have her in my district when I first ran for the Fairfield RTM (Representative Town Meeting), & always left my campaign lit in her door when no one was home...she would tell my mom about it later! An amazing woman, an incredible teacher...she will be missed greatly! Godspeed...

I was so saddened to hear of Helen's difficulties over the last few weeks and months. Helen was such a kind and gentle soul. I remember running into her several years ago at Macy's after I hadn't seen her for a while. I swear we stood and talked to each other in the gift department for 2 hours straight. It felt like 10 minutes. I will miss her very much. My thoughts and prayers are with Bob, Doug, Greg, Johanna and their families. Fly Helen. You are going Home!!!

There are no words to describe how sad our hearts. Helen was such a special person to us all. Her caring spirit, fun personality and listening ear were just a few things that we most remember her for. My kids will miss running next door for some ritz crackers, turtle time and summer water balloons. They will miss her round about, round about song and horsy gitty up song. They will miss her crazy hats, fun pictures and stories of her travels and teaching moments. We were truly blessed to have had Helen in our lives. We miss you Helen, Helen Watermelon :)

My deepest sympathy to the entire Hamm family by far the best teacher my two children had at Stratfield School or another other school they attended. My Jeni will always remember Mrs. Hamm pulling her tooth for her and when both of them graduated from Andrew Warde they each received a hand written note from Mrs. Hamm congratulating them she will truly always be in our hearts . Rest In Peace to a wonderful woman.

So beyond sad about this. What a wonderful teacher, friend and woman. Emma was lucky enough to get her in first grade and I actually cried because I was so happy! Every time I would run into her we would still laugh about some of the funny things she remembered Emma saying. Helen, you inspired hundreds of children and their parents over your many years of teaching at Stratfield. And, you also pulled hundreds of teeth! Stratfield's very own tooth fairy. Your beautiful legacy will live on in all the kids you taught. You will always be very much loved and very much missed. R.I.P., lovely lady.

Helen was a gifted teacher and cherished colleague. She skillfully taught hundreds of children how to read and write. Helen was able to reach and teach all children, including so many with significant learning challenges. Helen welcomed other teachers into her classroom to observe effective new methods of teaching. Her generous spirit as an educator thus enabled the gift of literacy to be shared with innumerable students well beyond her own classroom.
God Bless you Helen. You will be remembered with fondness and gratitude. Deepest Sympathy to your loved ones

Helen was a wonderful woman who always took an interest in others and contributed immensely to making the world a better place. I got to know her in our retired Fairfield teachers organization. She served as recording secretary for a number of years and did so in her own quiet competent manner. She was one of those people who totally took her responsibilities very seriously and always had a kind word for everyone. My sincere condolences to Helen's loved ones. Rest in peace Helen. Be blissfully happy with the angels. You will be very much missed on earth.
