John Ignatovich Obituary

John J. "Iggy" Ignatovich
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John "Iggy" Ignatovich, 79, of Sandy Hook CT, formally of Fairfield on May 5, 2025. A loving husband, a devoted dad and papa, John left a legacy of kindness, love, laughter, and unconditional love. John was born on February 1, 1946, in Bridgeport, CT to the late John Vincent and Mary Eleanor Ignatovich. He was a graduate of Ludlowe High School. After high school he enlisted in the Navy and served his country from 1964-1968. He was a proud American and Veteran. John had a few different jobs throughout life that he enjoyed – The Smithy Restaurant, Electrician, Inspector, Painter, and his last job as an Operator for over twenty-two years at The Bridgeport Harbor Station (PSEG). He retired in 2006 and took care of his grandchildren. He poured love, wisdom, and encouragement into his family. His family was his greatest treasure, and he will be deeply missed by his wife Mary Reitano, his daughter Tanya and her husband Eric Dickervitz, and his 2 cherished grandchildren, Niko Dickervitz and Nina Dickervitz. John loved to spend time in his yard, feeding all the "woodland" animals that came to have breakfast with him, plant his garden, and fish. He enjoyed spending all the holidays and birthdays with his family even when he would say, "why are we celebrating your birthday for a month" he still loved it! John was a grateful member of AA and lived a sober life for the last 44 years. He loved being surrounded by the people he loved. He was a friend to everyone he met and always supported the people in his life. John touched countless lives with his selflessness, wisdom and unwavering spirit. His faith and his ability to bring joy and laughter to the lives of others were unparalleled. In addition to his wife, daughter and grandchildren, he is survived by his sister Blanche and brother-in-law "brother", Tom Barnett, his niece Cheryl and her husband Terry Krueger, his Aunt Janet Ignatovich, cousins Hayward Ignatovich and Sandy Hoekenga, several family members and friends that he called family. He is also preceded by his cherished uncle Peter Ignatovich. He will be remembered with a Mass in his honor on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at St Mark Church, Stratford, followed by Military Honors. You were more than just a dad; you were our rock, our mentor, and our best friend. Though you are no longer with us, the love and lessons you shared will live on forever in the hearts of all of us, your family and friends. Rest in peace, Dad. You will be missed more than words can express; please know we find comfort knowing you are now at peace. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in John's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. https://www.stjude.org/ The Adzima Funeral Home- Stratford has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements. I met Iggy in 1957 when I moved to Fairfield. He lived down the street and we did a lot of the normal kid things in those days. He always had a contagious laugh. After high school we all went our separate ways and regretfully we never reconnected. I will never forget him.

My Uncle John was always very special to me. He was kind and funny and loved animals. Even though we often lived quite a distance apart, our lives intersected at various times. When I was little he and my Aunt and cousin lived down the street from us and many years later, he helped me as a young woman leave a very bad situation and I was able to move to CT and live with him and my cousin (who is like a sister to me). He had a wonderful sense of humor, a twinkle in his eye and a laugh that was infectious. I will always remember his faith in God and his constant reminders of "one day at a time" and his wisdom to know the things he could change and the things he could not. He will be in my heart forever!!! He gave me my beautiful Aunt in his wife and my beautiful cousin (sis) and so happy memories. Love always, Cheryl and husband Terry Krueger.
