Joseph Coleman Obituary

Joseph J. Coleman
Joseph J. Coleman, 89, of Shelton, CT, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family following a long-term illness. Joseph was a proud graduate of Central High School in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and later earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University. He served his country with honor in the United States Army and enjoyed a distinguished 43-year career in the Engineering organization at Sikorsky Aircraft. In 1954, Joseph met the love of his life, Marie Wielebinski, at the Coleman Ice Cream Company in Scranton, PA. What began as a summer job for Marie blossomed into a lifelong romance, culminating in a 67-year marriage. Together, they raised two children, enjoyed the company of two grandchildren, and welcomed a great-granddaughter into the world. Joseph's greatest joy in life was his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Madge and Edward Coleman; his brother Edwin Coleman; and sister Ruth Vaglivelo. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Marie; his son, Joseph (Jay) Coleman Jr.; his daughter, Lee Ann Jimmie, and son-in-law Gregory Jimmie; his grandson, Gregory Jimmie II, and wife, Danielle Jimmie; his great-granddaughter, Eden Louise Jimmie; and his granddaughter, Alexandra (Lexi) Coleman. Joseph also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.
Deeply loved by his family, they find solace in knowing he is now in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ. On Monday, friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Rd., Shelton. On Tuesday, his funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael Church. His burial will follow at Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to The Muscular Dystrophy Association or Yale New Haven Hospice. Friends may leave condolences at www.riverviewfh.com.

The picture of Joe is perfect because it symbolizes the inner smile when I recall working with him. Joe is the reason that folks like me and all those US military folks can relax a bit when they´re up in a Sikorsky helicopter. Thank you, Joe!

Joe was an engineer and leader o with fantastic capability. He was responsible for the success of several major Sikorsky aircraft, including the legendary Black Hawk. I flew the aircraft that his team designed, and his precise attention to safety and quality never let us down. We will miss you Joe, RIP.

Mr. Joe Coleman was one of the first engineers I met at Sikorsky. He was a great man. Kind but direct, a true Sikorsky guy. To his wife and family, and most especially Jay, I express my sincerest sympathies. May your memories keep Joe alive in your hearts and minds forever. May God bless Joe, and may God bless his family.
