Joseph D'Apice Obituary

Joseph P. D'Apice, MD
Joseph Patrick D'Apice, MD (80) departed peacefully from this life on May 6, 2020 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was the beloved husband of Cecilia Huber D'Apice (Chee-Chee) with whom he shared 55 years of marriage and a passion for hosting elegant dinner parties featuring his homemade pizza and breads. Joe and Chee-Chee spent many enjoyable hours together antique hunting and decorating their home with a myriad of treasures they prized for their beauty and history. The stylish couple could frequently spotted on the dance floor, twirling to big band music.
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Joe was the son of the late Anthony and Martha Petrucelli D'Apice of Trumbull and Fairfield and the brother of Rita D'Apice Gould (Van) of Killingworth. He was a graduate of Fairfield College Preparatory High School, Fairfield University and St. Louis University Medical School. Hundreds of Dr. D'Apice's patients will remember a witty, caring man nattily attired in a suit, tie and suspenders.
He began his 47-year career in Psychiatry with a residency at Fairfield Hills Hospital in Newtown, Connecticut followed by a Psychiatric Residency at Yale University. While maintaining a bustling private practice in Fairfield, Connecticut, Dr. D'Apice served as Attending Psychiatrist at St.Vincent's Medical Center and the Norwalk Hospital Psychiatric Clinic. He was honored to serve as a Consultant to the Diocese of Bridgeport, Marriage Tribune and enjoyed mentoring students as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at New York Medical College. A member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. D'Apice was also a Diplomate of The American College of Forensic Examiners and the American Board of Forensic Medicine. Dr. D'Apice was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
He leaves behind his children Mary D'Apice (Yoshi Ogawa) of Indianapolis, Martie D'Apice (John Banks) of New York City, A.J. D'Apice (Jennie) of LaGrange, IL and Ann D'Apice of Barcelona, Spain. Dad was very proud of his Italian heritage and his children are so grateful he passed on its many culinary delights. His children will miss his sense of humor and colorful turns of phrase. "Beeba" will lovingly be remembered and widely quoted by grandchildren Aya, Lucas, Ally, Evie, Hank and Leo who fondly recall his favorite catch phrase - "We have more fun than people!"
A private burial will be held on Saturday, May 9. When it is safe to gather, friends and family will be invited to a Catholic Mass with all the pageantry he adored. His family plans to make the consummate host and life-of-the-party beam with pride when he looks down upon a jubilant celebration of his life.

4 years have passed and I still think of this gentleman who helped equip me with the knowledge and insight I needed to live a happy and meaningful life. On many occasions I find myself wishing I could still consult with him, and get his unique, very helpful, and hilarious take on things. I take comfort knowing he's reclining in the best place imaginable. Love you, Dr. D., Tina

Dear Mrs. DApice and Family,
I am very saddened to hear of Dr. DApices passing. He was a very kind and brilliant man - truly a Man for Others in the Jesuit tradition.
Dr. DApice helped me to understand the science of anxiety and supported me when I lost my own Dad (who had taught him at Fairfield U. so many years ago). I will never forget his kindness and wonderful sense of humor. I know he is smiling down on his family from a beautiful spot in heaven! Please know that you are all in my prayers.

Cece and Family, My deepest sympathy at your loss of Joe. He is an 'old' friend going back to FCPS when we were skinny kids trying to get through the Jesuit world at Fairfield. For many years as a Priest working in Fairfield County, I found Joe's advice and concern for people to be a great help to me in my ministry. We know that he was a very colorful person who could have just the right words to bring a smile and laugh to a challenging situation. I look forward to celebrating his departure to the Kingdom of God in the near future. He was a fine Catholic Gentleman. God bless you. Fr.Scheyd

Dear Mrs. DApice and Family, I am so sad to hear this news. I was a patient of Dr. D'Apice for many years and consider him a very dear friend. He was one of the smartest, funniest, and most compassionate people I have ever known. He educated me about the biological nature of my anxiety and helped me to understand how to manage it. If it were not for him, I would never have been able to experience the true joys of life such as marriage and children. Every session, I bombarded him with a dizzying number of questions on how to respond to the complicated people and situations of the day. His insights were always on target and his blunt, undiplomatic manner, hilarious! I will miss his warmth and wit most of all. I have only seen Dr. DApice once since he retired, but I have heeded his advice to take me with you and have been okay. He clearly did Gods work and is now resting in heaven. May Christs peace bring you all consolation and strength. Sincerely, Tina Kelly

So sorry to hear about Joe. We were at Prep and the University together. He along with my two brothers and I would do a lot together. My older brother, Bob, dated his sister Rita for a while. We will keep Joe, Chee-Chee and family in our thoughts and prayers. Chuck & Juliette Whelan
