Joseph H. Romick, 93, lifelong resident of Milford and beloved husband of 58 years to the late Alice (Larkins) Romick, entered into eternal rest while at his home, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. Born on September 6, 1932, he was the son of the late John S. and Stella (Nee Magda) Romick.
Joe proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, during the Korean War as part of the 25th Division, Company C (Tropic Lightning). After graduating from Milford High School, Joe went on to build a long and respected career as a payloader operator with Beard Sand and Gravel Company, where he worked for 44 years. He was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan who looked forward to Sunday football, a true car enthusiast who proudly considered himself a "blue Chevy man," and someone who took great care in maintaining and handwashing his vehicles. Joe loved spending time outdoors; fishing, landscaping, walking each day, and tending to his garden, where he grew flowers and 22 varieties of vegetables over the years, becoming especially known for his tomatoes.
He also cherished time with family and the adventures they shared. Joe enjoyed vacationing near the water in New York, New Hampshire, and Maine, where he could fish and kayak whether on a quiet lake or the open sea. Family trips included Disney vacations and snorkeling in Bermuda. He loved animals, fairs, apple picking, corn mazes, and cheering on sports with his grandsons. Festive by nature, Joe delighted in decorating for every holiday, and his adventurous spirit meant he was always ready for anything- from white water rafting and roller coasters to alpine slides and ziplines. Above all, he will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his full embrace of life.
Joe is survived by his daughters, Lori Romick and her husband, Tom Barrell, Melinda Connors and her husband, Jim, and Wendy Ruggiero and her husband, Joseph; his cherished grandchildren, Jimmy IV Connors, Kevin (Tarjana) Connors, Tommy (Ryan) Romick Barrell, and Joey Romick Barrell; his nephews, with whom he was particularly close, Paul Romick and his wife, Megan and their son, Leo, and Peter (Aileen) Romick; as well as several other nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his newborn daughter, Mary; and brother, John.
The family deeply appreciates the compassionate, professional, and respectful care by his "Right at Home" aides, Patricia, Vida, Doris, and Dawn. The family is also deeply thankful to the Yale Home Care and Yale Hospice Care teams who provided outstanding medical assistance and comfort care.
Friends and family may call from 4pm to 7pm on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at the CODY-WHITE FUNERAL HOME, 107 BROAD ST., MILFORD, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at St. Mary Church (MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH), 70 Gulf St., Milford, CT 06460. Interment with Military Honors will be private.
