Born in Bridgeport on March 20, 1935, he was the son of the late Joseph and Susan (Bendik) Silhavy. In his youth, the family moved to Easton during the growing season to care for the family farm. He attended Samuel Staples and later Bullard-Havens Technical High School. Joe entered the U.S. Air Force in 1953 and served during the Korean War. Upon his return from Korea, he was stationed in Newburgh, New York. He was honorably discharged and then served as a full-time Easton firefighter from 1957 to 1963 before switching careers to become an officer with the Easton Police Department. After his retirement from the police department, he was employed by People's Bank as a Credit Card Fraud Investigator. He was president of the International Association of Credit Card Fraud Investigators, and enjoyed organizing international meetings where he formed many friendships. In 1958 he became a member of Ashlar-Aspetuck Masonic Lodge #142 in Easton where he was elected Master in 1988. He was a member of many Masonic appendant bodies which included Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in the Valley of Bridgeport, Darien York Rite Bodies- Trinity Commandery #3, Washington Council #6, and Rittenhouse Royal Arch Masons #11, and was honored to be a member of Pyramid Shriners #9 in Stratford.
Joe was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Bridgeport where he served on the church council and building committee during the 1990's.
Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife Barbara. Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

With deepest sympathy to the Silhavy family at the passing of your father, grandfather and patriarch. He was truly a good man in every way. Barbara worked with my late mother at HKMS and of course everybody knew 'Sarge' from the Easton Police force and through his constant involvement in civic affairs in town. Vera Anderson's entry in this guest book brought tears to my eyes because I could not have thought of a more perfect verse to describe the life of this man. Knowing he is with Barbara again and with all who have gone before him takes a little of the sting of loss away, as do all the beautiful, fun and special memories so many people share of this man. Professional in every way, committed, brave, sincere, outspoken, tenacious, and yet humble, selfless, giving, friendly, and warm. May he rest in perfect peace and may he enjoy forever the reward of a well lived life.

Dear Joe, you were a special friend and a great person to work with and learn from the needed skills for a Police Officer to serve the department and its public. I will miss the telephone calls we had after both our retirements. Certainly your family I give my condolences and may they heal from your loss knowing that you are now with Barbara in Heaven. You and Barbara did your duty bringing two fine Sons into this World that any parent would be proud to do.

I am truly saddened to hear of his death. Knowing him for close to 35 years, since I was 18, he will always be Mr. Silhavy to me, yet he, like Mrs. Silhavy, would always treat me more like a friend than just their son's pal; always fully engaged with whatever we were discussing. Eventually moving to Easton myself, I would look forward to running into the both of them at various Town functions. Remembering the smiles and hugs now is just about as nice as the moments they were actually shared.

My sincere sympathy to Darrin, Donna, TJ, Jenna and the rest of Joe's family. I will always remember the wonderful stories that Joe shared with me, while caring for him, when his beautiful wife Barbara passed away. My favorite was when he shared how, the moment he first saw Barbara, he knew that would be his wife! How right he was! It was an honor knowing you Joe. You and your family, truly made me feel like family! I still feel like we are.
God Bless.
Love,

Dear Joey, Darrin & Families,

Looking back through the 60+ years I have known your father, he conducted his life with integrity, dignity, compassion and kindness. What a fine example living on in both of you and his grandchildren.

This piece by Ralph Waldo Emerson best describes your Dad.

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world in a little better place; whether by a healthy child, garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is the meaning of success".

With deepest sympathy and love, Aunt Vera
