Robert Nagy Obituary

Robert Jules Nagy
Robert Jules Nagy aged 80 of Westport, CT, found peace on April 30, 2023, following a 5-month intensive battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Fairfield, Rob lived in Westport for over 50 years. Rob enjoyed a long and successful career as an investment banker/financial advisor, starting out with Prudential Bache and having the great pleasure of spending the last 20 years of his investment career at Source Capital in Westport.
Rob's golf journey took off while at Andrew Ward High School in Fairfield, where he had the privilege of being named golf team captain. He honed his sport at Gettysburg College and then later in the United States Navy, competing against other branches of the Service. Rob served in the submarine force of the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in April of 1973.
Rob qualified three times for the U.S. Senior Open Championship and continued to shoot his age until the end of his life. While a stalwart competitor, one of his most endearing characteristics was how humble he was. He would play golf with anybody and enjoy the camaraderie, or he would play in Pro/AM or Celebrity tournaments with a genuine will to win. Rob was a bona fide raconteur, so spending time with him after a game meant a Black Russian cocktail and lots of laughs. Rob embodied a line from the poem "IF" by Kipling, "If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue or walk with Kings nor lose the common touch."
Rob spent over 38 years as a member of the Connecticut Golf Club in Easton, winning 5 Club Championships in 4 decades along with 9 Senior Club Championships. He also had 7 holes-in one across a variety of courses. In his later years, he was an informal and generous golf teacher to family and friends. He felt that golf, as a self-regulated game, was like living a good life; deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.
Rob was a devoted and loving partner to Carmen. She became the love of his life over the last 18 years. He was a proud father to Christopher, father-in law to Samantha, and a dedicated grandfather. Rob also adored his sister Joan and her children, Carmen's family and the close friends that supported his life's journey. Rob's love of golf was superseded only by his love of spending time with his grandchildren, William James and Luke Robert. Whether it was teaching them golf, cheering them on at their sporting events, enjoying a FCCC performance, or simply being the best babysitter anyone could hope for, it was by far his favorite thing to do.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 from 5:30pm to 8pm at The Boathouse at Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport.
In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations may be made in memory of Rob to the Arminio/Effron Scholarship Fund at the University of Connecticut Foundation by using this link: s.uconn.edu/effron-nagy .

What can you say about a man like Rob Nagy--you can say a lot, but to every life he touched there was a different response. To some he was an enigma, keeping his thoughts all to himself while collecting all of yours. To others, he was a saviour, bringing joy and happiness into a life that craved love, and asked so little in return. There were parts of him you couldn't touch, and parts of him--he only revealed to you. I'll miss you Rob. Safe journey. AnnieO'

I was shocked to read about Bob's passing. We were in school together at Andrew Warde and later got stationed together at Comsublant in Norfolk. I will never forget the night we drove back to the base from Connecticut in his old Volkswagen that had no heat and it was the coldest night of the year. We lost touch in later years but I often wondered how he was doing. I am sure he will be missed by many. RIP Bob.

William (Bill) Nagy

My name is William (Bill) John Nagy. I am a first cousin of Bob Nagy. I have very fond memories of Bob and my childhood growing up in Fairfield Ct. Bobs' parents (Sally and Jules Nagy) were the best Aunt and Uncle a young boy could have. Many a week, during summer vacation, I would spend with Bob at my aunt and uncles' home on Division Ave. (Tunsis Hill) Fairfield, Just up the hill from the Beechmont Dairy where Bob and I could get a hot fudge Sunday for 25 cents. We palled around together all through grammar school and high school (Bob at Andrew Ward, me at Notre Dame Catholic High, Bridgeport). We drifted apart during our college years, (Bob went to Bridgeport University (when there was a BU) I to Unv. Conn. Storrs Ct. Our lives really separated after college. I finished the ROTC program at U. Conn Class of '66' then spent the next 30+ years in uniform, U.S. Army retiring as a Colonel. I was glad to hear that Bob had done his 'Bit' in the Navy during the Vietnam era. If his sister Joan would like to re-connect with me she can reach out either e-mail [[email protected]] or call 520-355-5064. I now live in Tucson, AZ with my wife Leslie, I'm 79 years old. Bob had a year on me.
