Carl N. "Buck" Gates Jr., 88, formerly of Summerdale and a resident of Messiah Village, passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at Holy Spirit Hospital.
He was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Summerdale to the late Carl N. Sr. and Ethel Speck Gates.
Carl retired from International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 126. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion 751, Enola.
He was known for growing tomatoes. He was an avid Yankees fan and admired Sonny Jurgenson, #9, with the Washington Redskins. He especially loved and played in his younger years baseball and softball. In 1962 he was coach of West Enola Little League, which played for a qualifying game championship in Williamsport.
He is survived by his son, Daniel Rhoads of California; a daughter, Lorraine Wagner of Mechanicsburg; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Arlene Murray of Camp Hill; a nephew, Richard Murray of Mechanicsburg; and two nieces, Eileen Bruner of Mechanicsburg and Charlene Owen of Duncannon.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Messiah Village Chapel, 100 Mt. Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, with the Rev. Terry A. Rose officiating. Interment will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Saturday.
