Montgomery Banister Obituary

Montgomery Banister, 86, of Newville, formerly of Skillman, N.J., died Saturday, July 19, 2008, in Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

Born May 27, 1922, in Newton, Mass., he was the son of Seth W. and Elizabeth True Montgomery Banister and the widower of Anne Siemon Banister.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, as well as with the U.S. Merchant Marine.

Mr. Banister graduated from the Webb Institute, and was a naval architect for J.J. Henry Co. in New York City. He also traveled the world extensively as a ship designer, and designed the first liquefied natural gas container for shipping.

He belonged to the Society of Naval Architects, the Van Harlingen (N.J.) Historical Society, and was an avid bridge player.

Mr. Banister is survived by his sister, Lois Ann Banister of Newville; two daughters, Kim E. Banister of Boiling Springs and Robin W. Banister of Philadelphia; two sons, William N. Banister of Milford, N.H., and James M. Banister of Hampton, Va.; and seven grandchildren, Caleb Banister, William Banister, Tyler Heishman, Emma Heishman, Hugh Banister, Anne Banister and Rachel Schor.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Egger Funeral Home, 15 Big Spring Ave., Newville, with Pastor John Good officiating.
