Bernard Slingsby Obituary

Bernard "Bernie" D. Slingsby, 88, of Grand Island passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2025.

Bernie was born Feb. 18, 1937, in Custer County, to Edgar and Doris (Mills) Slingsby.

He was raised near Ansley, where he graduated from Ansley High School with the class of 1954.

Following graduation, Bernie enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

On Jan. 11, 1965, he was united in marriage to Barbara Hank, and were blessed with children - Tammy and Terry.

Bernie often traveled while employed for Missouri Valley Construction.

He was in Lodgepole from 1974-1976, working as a dragline operator before making their homebase Grand Island.

Bernie worked on many overpasses and Interstate 80 as it was built across Nebraska. Traveling on I-80 would inspire many memories of building the road when Bernie was younger.

Bernie was a dedicated Nebraska Husker fan.

He enjoyed playing golf.

Bernie was a prankster and could get himself into trouble usually with his best friend, Jim Trotter.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara; children - Tammy (Steve) Nunley of Yakima, Wash., and Terry (Jamie) Slingsby of Bloomington, Ill.; grandchildren - Ashley (Nathan) Sisson, Allison (Mitch) Styczynski and Rachel Slingsby; great- grandchildren - Charolette and Andrew Sisson; and sister Charolette (Lonnie) Schnacker of Kearney.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; brother Gaylord Slingsby; sisters - LaVonne McDonald and Lorene Stahlberg; and son-in-law Randy Ommen.

To honor Bernard's wishes, cremation was chosen.

No services will be held at this time.

All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
