Tommy Smith Obituary
Tommy Ray Smith, 62 years old, died on Saturday, June 17, 2023, in Hastings NE.
Tom was born in Kearney NE, on March 27, 1961, to Teddy and Roseann Smith. He was preceded in death by both parents, stepfather LaMonte Hollertz, along with stepbrother Rob Hollertz, Aunt Arlene Lemmer, Mother-in-Law Mary Lou Moore, and grandchild Avery. He is survived by his brother Jeff Smith, stepbrothers Allan and Kevin Hollertz, and stepsisters Sue Hollertz and Karen Buettner. Tom left behind his wife Dedra and their children; Larissa Turner (Kory & Family), Whitney Smith (Alexander & Family), Arlene Holland (Aron), Arthur, Kooper, and Paden Smith. Alongside his children he found bonus kids Heather (Andrew & Family) and Aaron France.
After high school in Phelps County, Nebraska, Tom lived the cowboy lifestyle, enjoying rodeos and working at feed lots riding and training horses.
Tom married Dedra Moore on June 30, 1989, in Dighton KS and gained a daughter, Larissa Foos, who became Larissa Smith in November 1989. From there life took their growing family between Kansas and Nebraska.
Tom attended Hastings Community College and received a degree in Animal Science in 1993 that he used while cowboying and ranching. In 1995 the family relocated to Okmulgee, Oklahoma where he went to the Technology Institute of Oklahoma and joined the Shoe, Boot, and Saddle Program. While there he received an internship at Trophy Tack in Bixby, Oklahoma, and began a career in leathercraft. Leather working was his passion! He made a guitar strap for Wade Hayes and Ty England liked his new strap so much, he gave him tickets to his show.
Tom and family headed back to Nebraska in 2001 after Trophy Tack closed, and he began work at Adams Land & Cattle Co., where he worked until his body could take no more in 2007. From there Tom enjoyed cold beer, his birds, grandkids, and traveling as much as possible. Tom lived in Red Cloud, Nebraska at the time of his passing.
A Celebration of life will be held at Slyvester's Bar in Broken Bow on July 1, 2023 from 5-8 p.m.
