Mike Elliott, 79, of Guilford Connecticut died February 24, 2021.
Mike was born in Sycamore on September 11, 1941 to John M. Elliott and Lucy Boies Elliott. He grew up in Sycamore and spent many happy days in the longtime family home on Somonauk Street. He graduated from Sycamore High School in 1960.
Mike's post-secondary education began at Beloit College. He later transferred to the University of Iowa to study Journalism. Mike came by journalism naturally being the great grandson of Henry L. Boies, an early newspaperman and owner of the historic True Republican newspaper in Sycamore.
Upon graduation Mike began his career at the Chicago Tribune where he held many positions eventually rising to be the Photo Editor. When he received an offer from the New York Times he left this position and moved to New York City to become part of what he deemed to be the best newspaper in the land.
He spent the rest of his working career with the Times doing similar work. He told many stories of putting the paper together under the ever-present deadlines. He developed working relationships with photographers from all over the world in order to obtain pictures that would illustrate current news events.
Mike thrived in New York City. He loved the vast selection of restaurants and unsurpassed cultural activities of New York. He developed a passion for the Metropolitan Opera as well as the Yankees.
For all of his adult life Mike suffered from MS. He fiercely resisted its onslaught by many hours of work in the gym and pool He never complained about his illness. He was exemplary in his dealing with adversity.
Like the rest of his family Mike was an avid reader. Many hours were spent with book in hand. One particular area he extensively explored was American history. His knowledge and retention were formidable.
Mike is survived by his loving partner in life, Marjorie Pawling. He is also survived by his sister Sue Kainz of Barrington, Illinois and brother Pat Elliott of Lorane, Oregon. Also surviving are his nephews and niece: Mike Kainz, Pat Kainz, John Kainz, and Bridget Elliott.
