JOHN McGRATH Obituary
Born Dec. 6, 1973, in Chicago, the son of Bernard Francis and Antonia (Alamo) McGrath, he married Shannon L. McLaughlin on Dec. 21, 1994, in Walhalla, S.C.
After serving in the National Guard, John was employed as a machinist/welder at Dawn Equipment Co., Sycamore.
He is survived by his wife, Shannon; children, John Michael and Kalene; mother, Antonia (Art) Valadez; mother- and father-in-law, Earlene and Terry Hollifield; brother, Bernard (Nancy) McGrath; sisters, Lucy (Jim) Eaton, Kathy McGrath, Elizabeth Bourke, Rosie (Marty) Janota, Mary Ann McGrath, Nancy (Steve) Merva and Jenny Peterka; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard.
The memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with the Rev. Kenneth Anderson of St. Mary Catholic Church, DeKalb, officiating and full military honors. Cremation is by Anderson Funeral Home Crematory. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. Thursday until the service at Anderson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the John M. McGrath Sr. Memorial Fund, in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115, or at National Bank & Trust.

I was sad to hear of the individual who was struck while on his bike. Even more sad once I realized I knew who he was. Shannon & Kids, please know... I always thought John was a kind person. Always smiling. Always pleasant. A very nice customer. When you all came into the store, it was refreshing to see such a close knit family. Sadly, he was taken too soon, but his memories will surely stay alive in your hearts forever.
