Josephine M. Elliott
Jo passed away May 15, 2021 at her home at Oak Crest Retirement facility. She was born September 12, 1930 in Clay Center, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Margaretta [Hutter] Chestnut. The family relocated to DeKalb area when Jo was a child. She graduated from Maple Park High in 1948. She was employed at the 5 and Dime Store and DeKalb Agricultural Association prior to her marriage. She married Dr. Russell Elliott on June 30, 1951 in DeKalb at the First United Methodist Church in the Boardman Chapel.
Jo bowled for 40 years in various leagues, Monday Night Ladies, Tuesday Night Prowlers, Wednesday Night Ladies, Farm Bureau and subbed on Mixed Doubles League. She also enjoyed an occasional game of golf. She was known affectionally at Oak Crest as the Hanger Lady for her hand-braided hangars.
She was a stay-at-home mom, raising her three children and babysitting her grandchildren. After her children were grown, she went back to work for DeKalb Ag Research five years until her elderly father needed her help.
She is survived by her children Linda (Fred) Goold, Hayward, WI; Richard Elliott, Rochelle, IL; and Susan (Jeff) Willey, DeKalb, IL, and grandchildren Jeffery (Theresa) Davis, Brian (Sarah) Willey, Stephanie (Steve) Challand, Scott (Becca) Willey, and 8 great-grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters Louise Lowe and Beulah Swanson, one brother Paul Chestnut, and many nieces and nephews.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Russell, her brothers Herbert, Wendell and Jesse Chestnut; 3 sisters-in-laws, 1 brother-in-law, and her beloved granddaughter Katie Elliott.
The family thanks the Oakcrest nurses and staff for their wonderful care and attention they gave Josephine, and to Heartland Hospice for their care over her final weeks.
Funeral will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, June 28 at the First United Methodist Church of DeKalb, 317 N. 4th Street, with Rev. Jonathan Crail officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. The church is suggesting non-fully Covid vaccinated individuals wear masks.
Burial will follow at the Malta Cemetery, IL Route 38.
