Monica Mathiasen Obituary

Monica Mathiasen
Born: July 3, 1957 in Peoria, IL
Died: February 22, 2024 in DeKab, IL
Monica Lynn Mathiasen, 66, of Sycamore, Illinois, died on Thursday, February 22, 2024, in DeKalb, Illinois, following an extended illness. She was born on July 3, 1957, in Peoria, Illinois, to Robert R. and Lillian E. (Walker) Overmier.
On February 14, 1996, Monica married Jerry Mathiasen in Sycamore. He survives her, as do her five siblings: Mark A. (Mary) Overmier of Urbana, Illinois; Karen D. Overmier of Champaign, Illinois; Renee (Dan) Brachear of Littleton, Colorado; Gail E. (Don) Shaner of Winnebago, Illinois; and Juliana M. Overmier (Timothy Murphy) of Edmond, Oklahoma. Also surviving are a maternal aunt, Gerry Walker of Kankakee, Illinois; maternal uncle, Burt (June) Walker of St. Charles, Illinois; goddaughter, niece Courtnay (Alex) Brand of Blacksburg, Virginia; as well as several other nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins.
Monica's parents and her mother-in-law, Lavice J. (Grissinger) Mathiasen, preceded her in death.
Growing up, Monica attended St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Peoria and area schools, graduating from East Peoria Community High School in 1975. She received a B.S. degree from Illinois State University in Normal, where she played cello for four years in the school's orchestra. Subsequently, she received an associate degree in data processing technology/computer programming from Illinois Central College in East Peoria and an accounting certificate from Waubonsee Community College.
Over the past 25 years, Monica worked for various businesses in Sycamore, most recently as office manager for Sycamore Anesthesia Services, Ltd., and also for Excellere Anesthesia Services.
Monica will be remembered for her lifelong devotion to the cello, naming hers Herman--the joke at college being that she could always be found in the practice room with him (her man). She performed regularly with a trio, Illini Broken Consort. After years of dance lessons in her youth, Monica enjoyed watching old musicals as an adult. She competed in spelling bees throughout her early years. As an adult, she competed in tai quan do. She enjoyed cooking, especially baking brownies, and decorating her home for the seasons. She appreciated nature, with a special fondness for hummingbirds, her plants, feeding peanuts to the squirrels (which she named based on their traits), and observing meteor showers and other celestial displays. With Jerry, Monica also enjoyed fishing and working on the addition to their house. In fact, Monica loved power tools and shopping!
A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Friday, March 1, 2024, at Olson's Quiram Sycamore Chapel, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178. Casual dress is requested. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Monica's name may be made to Tails Humane Society, 2250 Barber Greene Road, DeKalb, IL 60115.

I love you very much. I was very lucky to find you 29 years ago. You left me with a giant whole in my heart. You were a very kind person and would do anything to help others that needed it. You made me me.

I had the pleasure of being her computer professor at ICC and then having her in my early music group, Illini Broken Consort. Monica will always be remembered as a fantastic person and one who loved making music.
