Dr. William Edward Tolhurst, Ph.D., 64, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at Oak Crest Retirement Center, DeKalb.
Born June 6, 1947, in Hartford, Conn., the son of Malcolm and Florence (Bauman) Tolhurst, William married Diane M. D'Agostino on May 1, 1971, in Old Saybrook, Conn.
He received his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and doctorate at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Tolhurst was a professor at the Northern Illinois University philosophy department for 33 years and served as the department chairman for many years. He was a member of the American Philosophical Association, and was a former secretary of the Illinois Philosophical Association. Dr. Tolhurst was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. A member of Christ the Teacher Parish in DeKalb, he served on several committees.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; children, Abigail (Rob) Christiansen of Lafayette, Ind., and Michael Tolhurst of DeKalb; grandchildren, Marty and Audrey; sister, Susan (Fred) Rose of Middletown, Conn.; brothers, Richard (Diane) Tolhurst of East Hartford, Conn., and Charles (Lauren) Tolhurst of Canton, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Newman Catholic Student Center, Christ the Teacher University Parish, 512 Normal Road, DeKalb, with Fr. Alejandro del Toro celebrating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery, DeKalb. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Anderson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Dr. William E. Tolhurst Memorial Fund, in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.

My sincere sympathy to all of Bill's family and friends. I worked with him on a number of issues at NIU and found we shared strong values on education and student life. He is/will be missed. I am sure I speak for the whole English Department at NIU to say how much we admired Bill and how much we shall miss him. He was a genial and stimulating presence for us all, whether we knew him as an acquaintence or as a friend. Our deepest condolences to you, his family.
