Clara Hewitt

Clara L. Hewitt, 74, of Findlay, Ohio, passed away July 2, 2024, at Serenity Spring Senior Citizens' Living in Arlington, Ohio.

She was born Oct. 6, 1949, in Kankakee, the daughter of Michael A. and Larue (Bilyard) O'Connor. Clara married Arnold Hewitt on July 1, 1972. He preceded her in death Dec. 2, 2021.

Clara had been a lifelong resident of the Kankakee area until July of 2022, when she relocated to Ohio.

She was a homemaker and a CNA at Merkle Knipprath Nursing Home, retiring in 1992. At that time, she went into the home daycare business, caring for her grandchildren as well as other kids who crossed her path. She loved spending time with her family and friends, but most of all, her beloved dog, Apple Jack.

Clara was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving are two sons, Gerald (Erin) Roth, of Carey, Ohio, and Michael (Julie) Roth, of Valrico, Fla.; two daughters, Theresa (Dennis) Overacker, of Findlay, Ohio, and Shawn (Barney) Rivera, of Kankakee; four sisters, Joyce (Geno) Swinford, of Kankakee, Helen Troeger, of Momence, Sharon Stanley, of Kankakee, and Mary Ford, of Bradley; three brothers, Pat (Paula) O'Connor, of Bonfield, Richard (Sandy) O'Connor, of Bourbonnais, and Danny (Vickie) O'Connor, of Indiana; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Arnold, preceding her in death were her parents; four brothers, Robert, Michael, Donnie and Carl; and one sister, Doris.

Memorial visitation will be from 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, until the 1 p.m. memorial service, both at Schreffler Funeral Homes, Kankakee Chapel. Deacon Greg Clodi will officiate the service. Inurnment will follow in St. James Cemetery, Irwin.
